Pushups under Smith bar
« on: November 02, 2006, 12:22:03 AM »
Inspired by daddywaddy's use of pushups in training, I thought of giving it a try in my workouts. I'm thinking of having the smith bar over my upper back as added weight. Has anyone tried this?

I once had a three year old climb up on my back  and yell "Giddy up!" while I was on his mom  :-\

        Does that count?

I just meant do pushups for a few sets, since I'd been doing DB bench press before and feel like changing up. I've never done pushups in training before.

I think in most smith machines if you lay the bar on your back during a pushup it will rotate around and hook over the stops everytime you try it, but I could be wrong.  I don't think it will work.

Try a weighted vest with most of the weight on the backside.

I didn't read Daddywaddy's post about one hour push-up sessions and I may be wrong . But isn't the whole idea of a one hour session  is to do the max amount of bodyweight push-ups only? I've seen half hour sessions doing bwt squats, push-up, sit-ups, etc by cage fighter's and some others. No extra weight applied. Any hour session must be a real man killer with just bwt alone. Going to require a lot of recovery time at first.  Let us know the results. Good Luck.

works well.. i still do it about once a month... prinL's point about the weight vest is a good one, if you have a weight vest available

I should explain it more clearly. I'm thinking about putting pushups in my workout as a new exercise for a regular 3-4 set program. Might just work if you rotate the bar backward to stop if from locking out.

Sounds like a waste of time. If your in the gym incline press or do flys.. why go to the gym to do pushups?

Why go to do bench press? They're essentially the same exercise.

no they are not....

they are very different and they work the chest, shoulders and tris in a different  fashion...

hand position makes the greatest difference when doing push ups....  to work the chest, use a moderately wide grip

when doing bench press your entire back and shoulders along with your feet are supporting the lift... when doing a push up only the palms and the toes support the lift... they are different...

I agree 100%.

Use the time in the gym time constructively. If you want to do pushups.. go for it, all I suggest is doin them at home.

Good points. I just figured since you're both pushing with the hands up and down that they were pretty similar.

Pushups with resistance will make a difference. The most convenient way is to wrap resistance bands around your back and hold them under your hands. Or get someone to hold a plate onto your back during the set, unless there's a vest.

Smith bar's not a bad idea but would be difficult without someone else there to help with the bar. Or the same idea using an old vertical leg press but again someone else's help would be needed.

Resistance bands sound like a good idea. I think we have some at home. If all else fails I'll see if anyone can help me with smith/plate. One of the areas where having a training partner is useful.

i somtimes used to end my tri workout with wieght close hand push ups i would do something like this
set 1 25 reps no wieght
set 2  2 45s 15reps
set 3  2 45s+ 25 or 35  10-12
its awkward with more than two plates on back
but it was a good exersize.

doing wieght push ups at the end of your chest workout wouldnt be a bad idea instead of flyes for a change...
