Hit 350lbs today!!!
« on: November 06, 2006, 09:18:06 PM »
I maxed out bench today and was able to hit 350lbs finally.  I'm weighing 170lbs all natural.  I tried 335lbs and did it fairly easy so I went for 350lbs and got it.  I think if I go straight for it again I'm going to try 365lbs in about 2-3 weeks.  My goal is 405lbs weighing under 180lbs.  This is a long term goal, but I have been lifting a lot more every week.  Only a month or so ago I was doing 315lbs.  My previous best was 340lbs but I was heavy at 195lbs.  Only thing I see stopping me is my shoulder.  Once I get 365lbs I'm going to slow down and lighten it up for a bit and let my shoulder recoupe.  Anyways I just had to share since it was the first time I hit 2x my body weight!

Shadow: thanks for the compliment, that means more than even what yates said.

I don't know why that seems so unattainable to you though.  My workout partner is the same age as me 25, and he won a bench press competition putting up 295lbs weighing 130lbs.  He is 2.27x his body weight whereas I'm only 2.06. Maybe your saing BS to me putting up 405lbs in the future, which you very well could be right then.

HAHA yeah thats me in the avatar.  My legs aren't very strong cuz I'm very lazy about lifting them, but I'm getting better.  They do have good size though from playing sports and running all my life.  My back is getting bigger too.  But, yeah you pretty much hit it dead on, while in high school all I really worked out was chest, bis, and tris.  Now I'm trying hard to catch everything else up.  Actually the weakest part of my physique is my upper chest I think.  These last few weeks I have been trying really hard to build it up.

There's no reason to go below 8 reps on sets if you start to feel something. Can always go for max. once in a while but making it a habit's not a good idea.

Very respectable weight for a 170 bwt. I assume your not strength training which is even more respectable. You might find that with added back thickness (strength) you bench will go up. And throwing in some PBN's (press behind the neck) or  military's seems to have a very favorable affect on a lot of heavy bencher's . Care to share you general upper body program? If only to  help The Shadow understand that there are way's to work up to using impressive weights even at a lower bwt. Good Luck.

Side Bar: You might find that working the legs increases general overall power. Which in turn can reflect on your benching power.

Well, I have worked out for probably 8 years very on and off though.  I would workout really hard for a few months, then get sick or hurt and stop for a few months.  For the last year I have been very consistent though.  I have been getting one muscle group a week going 5 days a week.  Since the beginning of summer I started a new workout and its been pretty good to me.

M-Chest: barbell flat bench 3-4 sets 4-10 reps, incline barbell (same as flat), flys 3-4 sets 10 reps, dips 12, 10, 6 (add lots of weight), finally pullovers 3 sets of 12-15 (every 3-4 workouts switch to dumbells)

T-Back: 4 sets of pullups 10 reps, close grip pullups 4 sets of 10, tbar 3-4 sets of 12, 10, 8, 6, bentover rows 3 sets of 8-10 (sometimes throw in straight leg deadlift)

W-bi/tri: 3 different bi and tri exercises.  I usually mix these up a lot so its hard to say

Th-off

Fri-Shoulders: behind the neck press 3 sets of 8-12, standing side raieses 4 sets of 12, seated bentover raises 4 sets of 10, dumbell shrugs 3 sets of 8-12

Sat-Legs: (I skip these way too often as already mentioned) Squats 4 sets of 8-12, front squats 3 sets of 8-12, hack squats 2-3 sets of 10, leg curls 3 sets of 8-12, seated calf raises 4 sets of 12-15

Sun-off

I do abs almost every day I workout switching between uppers and lowers
Upper: 3 sets of 25 crunches, 3 sets of 25 machine crunches (now I'm using weight, but before I wasn't), 200 standing side twists, 50 crunches

Lower: 3 sets of 25 reverse crunches, 200 bentover side twists, 3 sets of 25 hanging leg lifts

I don't eat great, but its definetly not the worst.  I'm working on getting better w/that part of my training.  Its by far the hardest for me as I love food and if I let myself I can gain weight very quick.

Another note: just this week I started two-a-days.  Same workout as above which I do around 6-7pm but now I'm getting in the gym early around 8-10am and doing a lightweight high rep workout w/added cardio.  I'm hoping to add more definition w/this two day workout because my body has become puffy since I started taking NOexplode and not doing cardio.

As far as intensity, I would say I'm about an 8/10.  I would like to workout a little harder, but if I'm all business all the time I find it hard to keep getting to the gym.  I love working out exactly how I am now, and I think thats the most important part of any workout program.  One that makes you want to be there!

There's no way in hell this guy can bench 350. I bet he does half reps with a spotter holding the bar.

Look I understand if people don't believe I put up that weight, hell some of the people watching at the gym couldn't believe I was trying it.  That pic was taken 3-4 months ago when I was weighing 160-165.  I have since added a good 5-10lbs of pretty clean muscle my body fat might be 1% higher or so.

As for my technique I have been complemented by many people there on my form for handling that much weight.  I don't touch my chest, I go down about an inch above my chest stop and then push up.  My workout partner was spotting me but he never even came close to touching the bar.  He did help me off if you want to count that against me though.

As for building up to the weight, I started w/135lbs repped it out 12 times, then 12 times again, then went to 185lbs 6 times, 225lbs 3 times, 275lbs 1 time, 315lbs 1 time, tried to max 335lbs 1 time and got it easy so I went for 350lbs 1 time and got it.

Anyways, I'm done defending my accomplishment.  I think most real bodybuilders here believe me, and I'm not really looking to impress people that are new to the sport that took a cycle and still can't hit 300lbs.

Some good lifts there man - certainly attainable for someone of your bodyweight and impressive nonetheless. Also props for putting a photo up to back yourself up - something the haters refuse to do.

It is definitely possible, especially the way you progressed the weight amounts. I have the same body type, taller and closer to 200lbs, and I think I could one rep 350 with that progression. Right now I do 135 x12 twice then move to 185 for 12, then 225 for 10, 275 for 6, then do 315 for 3-4 with the last one assisted, I then go back down to 225 and rep out usually around 15-16. I love how light 225 feels after doing the 315. Good work, keep banging the weights!
