On June 23, 2006, the world’s most famous street fighter, David "Tank" Abbott, will be squaring off against renowned Rumble On The Rock (ROTC) and Toughman fighter, Eric "Butterbean" Esch, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The time of this interview, Tank is relaxing at home in Huntington Beach, California, watching some TV: Deal or No Deal has just finished. It’s just a couple of days before Tank turns 41 (DOB 4/26/65).

Although the official press conference for the Tank Abbott vs Butterbean main event has been cancelled three times, it’s now expected to go ahead on Wednesday, May 3.

What information does seem to be known about this heavyweight showdown is that it will be an MMA event with tailor-made rules to suit the occasion, and is set for three 5-minute rounds.

Punters on the internet seem to be pretty split as to how the fight will go. But the perpetually stoic Abbott takes public opinion with a grain of salt. "Well obviously a lot of people – those picking Butterbean – are wrong. He’s going to get his arse handed to him," says Tank.

It is also believed Butterbean actually requested this bout, complaining that his previous opponents didn’t have a big enough punch to take him on – thus the request for master-blaster Tank Abbott. However, critics are also divided over which ‘Big Man’ will be bigger in the KO department, and some believe Butterbean has bitten off more than he can chew.

It was at UFC 6 that Tank first burst onto the MMA scene and manhandled such larger-than-life fighters as 300-pound Paul Varelans and 400-pound John Matua. Abbott believes he’ll also have the KO-edge over Butterbean. "He weighs 400 pounds, but I don’t think he’s going to hit as hard as I do. He’s big, but that doesn’t mean he’s strong."

David, how will you compare fitnesswise?

"Ha, ha, ha…I don’t know…at 400 pounds, I don’t know how fit he is. But he does stay relaxed when he’s out there, so…We’ll see what happens."

What do you expect his strategy to be? To just stand there and let you come to him?

"Ha, ha, ha…I think what he’s probably going to do is make it a punch-fest, but we’ll figure it out, ’cause I have all the options. I don’t think he does."

How’s your training going for this match?

"It’s going good. I’ve got three weeks already under my belt, and I’m just ready to turn it up now, and take it to another level."

What weight do you expect to be?

"Oh, I think somewhere around 270. I don’t want to get too small against him, but I definitely want to have some cardio."

And you expect him to come in at around 400?

"I’m pretty sure he doesn’t train too hard. Even if he cut weight down to 350, I don’t think he’d be in too much shape, that’s for sure."

On July1st, you’re fighting Amokrane "Kiane" Sabet at Cage Rage 17 in London. How will that go?

"I never really overlook anybody, but I’m not even thinking about him. He doesn’t strike me as somebody I really need to think about."

You saw him when you went to an earlier Cage Rage in London.

"I saw him alright, but I’ve already forgotten."

Will you have trouble backing up for that fight a week after the Butterbean fight?

"No. I’m used to fighting three times in the one night, so it won’t be a problem to fight a week later."

You’re also taking Eddie Ruiz and John Marsh with you as Team Tank. How will those guys fair?

"Everybody’s going to be in shape, so we’ll just climb on a plane, go over there and beat some people up, and come home."

Is Eddie Ruiz still as tough as rusty nails?

"Oh, yeah…Eddie’s always been tough, so he’s in shape, he’s ready to go, and he’s looking forward to it. So is John. And so am I."

David, is there anything you’d like to add?

"We’ll be in shape and ready to hurt some people. And I feel sorry for the people who are going to be in the ring with us. They’re the ones who are going to get hurt."

Tank vs Kiane

 NEWS JUST IN:

According to Tank Abbott, his fight with Butterbean has been postponed by promoters, and now looks to be happening on August 19.

David, what weight do you now expect to be fighting Kiane at?

"Somewhere between 250 and 300 pounds. I really don't care."

Tank is the most untrained and untalented fighter of all time.

But he puts on a good show even when he loses.

tank has alot of natural talent, but doesn't have the training to beat the top guys.  Now he's too old to do anything now, and he likes to party too much.

Actually he never had any talent to begin with.

He never trained to fight in any style or attempted to learn any techniques.  I believe he said he had no respect for fighting "style" or "techniques."  Yeah, what a genious.

All he has ever done to train is lift weights, spar, and do some (very little) endurance training.

He DID have a bad attitude, a lot of body weight to swing around, and some brawling experience.

I think he's a fat piece of shit who had his girl stolen by someone who actually knew how to fight and didn't look like a fat ass.

He had enough natural talent to enter the ufc and make some noise fighting people that on paper should have tuned him up .  Tank wasn't trained, wasn't fast , had some limited wrestling experience, but he had the ability to time opponents and score some impressive knock outs.  natural ability and skills learned from training are two different things.

Nonetheless, Bean will light him up.  Bean actually is a decent boxer.  He actually moves his head, has decent footwork and lots of power.  I expect this to be lopsided, unless Tank has somehow become Jacare.

He does have collegiate wrestling experience and he did train in a Mexican boxing gym in his early twenties- late teens, he said that is how he learned to punch so hard.  As far as preparing for MMA fights goes, he doesn't take it very seriously.  Butterbean on the other hand has been training seriously with ATT for a couple years now and is improving with every fight, that being said, Butterbean by Ko round 1.

That's true.

Tank actually trains pretty hard. He was training boxing for years before he started MMA, and was a decent wrestler. The problem is, he never made the transition to the new MMA. Grappling is very important now, and tank never adapted to the new environment. As a standup fighter though, he's very good. Incredible power. I don't think I've seen a harder puncher. He recently knocked out Cabbage easily, at 40 years old. Looking at Cabbage verses Andrei, well Andrei had much difficulty. HAVING SAID THAT, I think Bean will take him. He's a bigger bully, and a semi-legit pro boxer lol.

Yeah....

I'm watching Butterbean vs. Cabbage on Youtube.

After seeing that, I've changed my mind. I think Tank has a good chance.

lol, true, but cabbage has an unbelievable chin and i think butterbean struggles with the long rounds since he spends most of that time standing up.

he punched himself out on cabbage. i think he expected cabbage to go down. should have known better.

tank made a very good point about bean being so relaxed in the ring. this is probably the biggest advantage in fighting and is the reason fighters like tank and bean get away with turning up in terrible shape. it also adds to their power in a big way because they only throw power shots when the timing's right and they keep it simple, commit to the punch and just let their hands go.

seems so simple but in practise can be quite difficult when the pressure's on (as any of you that have fought before can attest to). you only get that ability with experience and that's what these guys have in spades.

i believe this fight will be similar to the cabbage one with both slogging away in close, but imo bean has the edge in punching technique and power and tank doesn't quite have cabbage's chin or stamina (it's going to be very wearing for old tank when bean starts leaning on him). tank will get sloppy and bean will find his chin.

I would like to see this fight.. at least one thing will be sure... you wont see either one of these men walk around the ring.... why because 1) they both are sluggers. 2) because they both want to prove thier strength and knock the others dick in the dirt..... bottom line heavy punches and one fat bastard going unconcious....

Butterbean has never been ko'd in any kind of fight (boxing/MMA), Tank has and just was by Buentello.

That doesn't really mean anything in MMA.. anyone can get KO'd  at anytime..

Yeah but we are talking about a guy who has only won one fight in the last eight years, going up against a guy that has never been Ko'd, ever.  Butterbean may be a fat slob but he will Ko Tank for sure, he probably will have the faster hands as well.
