I have been in the gym business in Australia for over 35 years and it is harder to make money now than in the past decades. New chains have opened and they have reasonable equipment and sales staff. The public are getting better gyms than they did in the past. It just seems that the pie is getting cut up into smaller portions each year. We have a large gym with heaps and heaps of equipment, aerobics, and childminding. We are also air conditioned and open long hours. In the new year we will add a ladies only circuit and a boxing area.

yeah but vince you gotta spend some fvcking money on your cardio dude... you need 20 treads minimum now and about the same crosstrainers...

you guys are missing the point on the dumb-bells, I am guessing that they are more of a converation piece and to  attract attention. Also to convey a message "we are hardcode". This a new gym and he will need as much attention as possible to attract new clients.


Armz, the juice bar should bring in a fortune. $7+ for a protein shake that they could make at home for $1 is great.

where is the gym located?

Having your gym known as HARD CORE is certainly not the way to a huge client base.  You have to base it more on family and womens needs, thats where the cash comes in, not from the local bodybuilding knuckleheads, they alone will not keep your gym afloat.
Congrats though, looks nice, so does cathy.

Vince, I see the Fitness First (our very own version of Planet Fitness) opening up left/right & centre. Where do you advertise (besides yellow pages)?

fitness first are VERY different than planet fitness business model wise...

ff are a total service provider (aerobics/spin/cardio/weights/childcare/rehab etc) whereas planet fitness is no frills weights and cardio only.

now, ff may still be cheap in some places but that will only be until they squeeze the mum and dad owned gyms out of their markets by undercutting them.

once they have control in certain areas expect them to be up around $100 per month.

that is their long term plan and their sydney CBD gyms are financing it because most of their suburban gyms are losing money...

How about having a hardcore gym and family friendly too..  Just don't put the cardio machines anywhere near the freeweights.  If you lose a crybaby once a month 'cause a big guy scared an older lady then oh well. you've just signed up about 100 members and lost one..  20% of the 100 members are the "Hardcore" crowed..

the second pic is just plain stupid. who's the clown that reckons  putting more small diameter plates on some dumb-bells is smart.

1. your entire range of motion is severely reduced
2. they are unweildy and hard to store/stack.
3. they look completely ridiculous.
4. they offer no real mechanical advantage over a machine or even a plain ol flat bench.
5. they need special elongated bars to hold the extra plates and therefore are not really ''adjustable''.


financially, mechanically, and practically those DB's are an abolute BB mong's idea. no thought whatso ever beyond..hey if you can do 8 plates ill put 55 plats on one and do it!....grunt grunt grunt..

Totally agree!  I had to take a second look cos I wasnt really sure what they were at first!  Could you imagine trying to lift those and balance on a bench ha ha!!!  I wish I was a member I would love to see how many people fell off in one day!  A lot of bruised egos soon in that gym.

vince, planet fitness gyms get 5000-8000 members into a medium sized gym with only cardio and basic strength training equipment - some of them have refurbished equipment too.

no aerobics, no child care, no frills which people are fine with @ $15 per month.

only 20% of the members tend to use the place often but most members stay as members for 2 years average since the hit each month is so minimal.

the staffing levels are very low. 1-2 people there at once.

at this price you get up to 25% of the population within 5 miles joining these places instead of the usual 8-10%.

they make money with less headaches for the owners trust me...

This is what is killing most of the real gyms out there.  These gyms have a 2-5 year lifespan and usually don't last long, you just have to have a strong enough business model to "weather the storm."

Fitness First is popping up every where in Adelaide. I joined a few months ago as its just down the road from work. I'm paying $35 per fortnight...  they still sign members even though people have to wait for the treadmills etc... absolute joke! fortunately I dont do cardio

I like those 375s.  You could have a running contest: whoever can stand up with those, no straps, gets a lifetime membership.

At least have a Wall of Fame with pictures of people who can do SOMETHING with those things.
