Exactly!  Genetics may influence how easy or hard it is, but in the end a calorie is still a calorie, and energy balance is basic math.

However, the aspartame in diet cola causes cancer to lab rats.   Imagine the effects of aspartame on a human over the course of few years...

The amount given to lab rates in those studies (per lb bodyweight) would be impossible for a human to attian in their regular diet.  There isn't any documented study to date that made it to a medical journal with the conclusion that aspartame is harmful to humans.

I think a lot of people don't really understand the relationship between diets high in sugar and the effects it has on insulin secretion and thus storage of excess body fat

beyond that it comes down to people being weak
