Cardio... is this ok
« on: March 13, 2007, 09:18:35 AM »
I usually do 1/2 hour sessions.  I start at 4 miles an hour for the first 2-4 minutes and then after that i do 5 miles an hour until the 8 minute mark.  From 8 minutes till 15 minutes i do 5.5-5.8 miles an hour.  At the 15 minute mark till the 20 minute mark i do 6 miles an hour.  From the 20 minute mark to the 25 minute mark i do 6.5 miles an hour.  From the 25 to 28 minute mark i do 7 miles an hour.  The last two minutes are a dead sprint of 8 miles an hour.  Is this too intense/not intense enough.  It says i burn 400 calories in the half hour i do it and run about 2 1/2 miles.

Also a few other things.  I do this on a treadmill just to let all ya know.  Im trying to lose excess bodyfat that i've gained this winter.  I want to do cardio sessions 5-6 days of week on top of my dieting.

That's pretty intense, but a solid plan.  Doing it 5-6 days a week though, I think you're going to burn out fast!  Try for 3 days per week, preferably on your non-lifting days.

Also, make sure you throw in a good 5 minute cooldown at the end (walking).

8 mph is a solid sprint?  How tall are you?

8mph on a treadmill is very fast.

Especially at the tail end of a 30 minute session!

Are the numbers on the treadmills miles per hour....like when you put it at 6, that's 6 mph?  This is a serious question, I'm not a treadmill person at all.

I'm pretty sure they are.  So when you crank it up to 8.0, that's 8 mph.

See, then I think 8 is good but I've maxed mine out at 12 for a "dead sprint" for 30 second intervals.  The things starts to get a little shaky (6'0, 220lbs) and makes tons of noise but I wouldn't call 8mph a sprint.

Yes, 8.0 miles per hour is just a 7:30 mile pace, which is definitely not a sprint, but for the final two minutes of a 30 minute run, it's a nice quick finish.

I'V heard that intense cardio starts to burn muscle as fuel.and moderate cardio burns fat.?this is a question.Im no cardio expert just started doing it on a normal basis not to long ago.

Is there an equation or something like that used to calculate how many calories you'll burn on cardio machines?  I'm just curious how you came up with the 150lbs?

I personally have never tested the machines, but I don't believe they are correct on their speed.  I starting running on the treadmill for about 2 weeks.  After those 2 weeks I realized I was almost an olympic runner as I could run a mile under 5:30 mins.  Now granted I've always been in good shape, but I've never broken a 6 min mile on a real track.

I talked to a friend of mine that trained on treadmills in high school to get him in better shape for football, and he said there is no way the mph on the treadmill is the same.  His logic was that since the treadmill is moving the ground for you, your not getting the full resistance that the street would provide.  To me that makes sense as I seem a lot lighter on my feet on the treadmill than on the street.
