ok i know this sounds stupid but i'm asking anyhow
« on: April 12, 2007, 05:18:06 PM »
ok my abs are a lagging body part for me. the upper look great but after that eh not so well. so basically what i need is just a list of exercise's that will help bring my abs into better shape. i'm already dieting so thats not a factor. my current three exercises are decline crunches leg lifts(done from a flat bench legs off the bench) and twisting crunches done on the decline as well. i know its probably the worst way of training abs so suggest some damn exercises that will help. i have no clue. abs is like the only bodypart i haven't brought out of a rut and brought into shape with the rest of my physique.

The much overlooked Ab Wheel. That $5 double or single wheel thing that looks like a toy. It will hit the lower abs as well as the upper abs, very, very well. It is a superior cord exercise when done right. And will probably be one of the few pieces of ab equipment you will ever need.

Go easy at first, try a few sets with the knees on the floor and fully stretch out until the arms are fully extended. As you get stronger, try touching the chin or nose to the floor each rep. As you advance, start with the toes on the floor, rather than the knees. And when your super, super advanced, start while standing and bend over at the waist. At that point you will discovery that the Ab Wheel is a outstanding piece of equipment. You could buy a 250 to 500 dollar ab machine, but there would really be no point in doing that. Your going to get more bang for you buck from that $5 ab Wheel investment.

Try on a smooth surface at first. To make it harder, place on a rug and from than, on a extra thick rug. Good Luck.

absolutely. i have the ab slide which is similar to the ab wheel. it is the ONLY piece of ab equipment i use besides some very rare occasions where i will do crunches. this machine built me an amazing six pack. when used correctly(the way pumpster described) combined with dieting, you will have the abs coming in in no time. this piece of equipment is PRICELESS. and it really only requires a couple INTENSE sets to get a complete ab workout from top to bottom. i cannot stress enough how great this piece of equipment is. it is worth the buy.

A version of the crunch, that some  athletes do, is to hold a BB (like you were doing benches) over & above you. Then just do the regular crunch sets. Try keeping the BB in a straight line throughout. Do not let it come too far forward doing the exercise. May have to have someone hold your knees down with this one. Can also start with the BB held behind you, arms extended way out. A true leverage power movement. In either version, keep the knees drawn well up. Can also use DB's or a Swing Bell. Good Luck

Side Bar, Not Abs: If you can get two DB's that can roll freely, than you might try this pec exercise (also hits the lats some). Take the position of doing a close grip push-up, thumbs forward, but gripping the two DB's.  Start by just doing a reverse fly, extending the arms out to the sides fully. Now roll the Db's back together again to the starting position. Tension throughout the entire exercise. Not like the regular DB fly, where the tension lessen the nearer to the top you come.

As always, JPM has some great advice.

If you want something different (and arguably harder) without any equipment, try doing Walk-outs.  It's the ab wheel exersise without the wheel.

Same position, kneel on the ground on all fours and slowly walk your hands out in front of you until your hands are well beyond your head and your finger tips are spread wide, face almost touching the ground, hold for 2 seconds, then simply walk your hands back.  You can also do them on your feet where you start in a toe-touch position and walk out from there, eventually walking back and ending in a downward dog/pike position.

WARNING:  Only for experienced lifters.  If you cannot support the weight of your body you WILL fall on your face.  I usually have to spot clients at the waist to intice them to try it.  Great for the abs, shoulders and back.

Holy shit you were right! I did 5 sets of 10 reps yesterday, and I don't think my abs have EVER been this sore! And it only took less than 10 minutes to do! Usually I do abs for 20 or 30 minutes to get a good work out in! This thing is awesome!

yeah, diet is the only factor.  need nothing more than crunches to build the abs, you don't see your lower abs because diet is not good enough, lower abs are last abs to come out.

Diet is a factor, but how much more impressive will the complete ab wall look when heavly muscled?  Than those deep ridges of muscle are all the more outstanding. Some guy's, with exceptional abs, look as if they could put a quarter between those ridges and it is almost hidden. Cruches alone may fall short in giving that type of development. Those computer enhanced abs in the movie 300 are a good example of how impressive a good developed set of abs might be.

Abs are a short range muscle group. And like most short range muscle groups, very powerful. The Wheel, alone with heavy weighted exercises, can bring out the more potentional in most of us. That's where exercise and controled diet come into play. Good luck.
