Bodybuilder faces charges of assault
Diabetic 'Mr. Natural Universe' says he suffered from insulin shock

REDWOOD CITY — The reigning "Mr. Natural Universe" faces assault and resisting-arrest charges following a scuffle with police who thought the diabetic bodybuilder was intoxicated or high on drugs.
In fact, claims Doug Burns, 43, he was suffering from insulin shock — and now the Menlo Park bodybuilder is considering suing the Redwood City Police Department.

The incident, Burns recalled Tuesday, happened shortly after he entered a downtown movie theater in Redwood City on Sunday evening.

He was feeling dizzy and suffering from poor vision — symptoms of low blood sugar — so he made his way quickly to the theater's concession area.

A theater security guard who noticed that Burns was walking in circles tried to talk with him, but the bodybuilder had trouble communicating the situation to the guard, Burns said.

Burns, whose recollection of the events is hazy, recalled that the security guard escorted him down the theater's escalator. The next thing he remembers is falling on the pavement outside the theater.

According to police, two officers tried to speak with Burns. When the bodybuilder attempted to make his way back into the theater, one officer tried to block his path, said Capt. Chris Cessina.

"Mr. Burns shoved one of the officers backward and then took a fighting stance to fight the officer," said Cessina.

The officer tried to stun Burns with pepper spray and attempted to wrestle him to the ground with the help of another officer, said Cessina. However, Burns continued to fight, and three more officers were called in as back-up to handcuff the 207-pound bodybuilder.
"The officers were faced with someone who assaulted them, and they didn't have any time to check to see if his situation was a result of a medical condition," said Cessina.

When paramedics arrived, they noticed Burns' Medic Alert bracelet and administered an on-scene medical test which later confirmed that he was suffering from low blood sugar, Cessina said.

Burns was cited on assault and resisting-arrest charges and then taken to the hospital.

Well...How were the cops suposed to know he was diabetic? I think they probably acted the only way they could...but I also think he should not face charges if he could prove he was in an insulin reaction.

Cops are idiots. Bottom line. They abuse their power and they think they're above the law.

Those of us in concealed carry states only call the police to help clean up the remnants of those we've pinkmisted.

There is a time for vigilante-style justice. But at some point, he will need to call the authorities for some type of assistance.
Remember Flava Flav doing the song "911 is a joke?" Then a period of time passes, and he needs medical attention or else he's about to kick. Who did he call then? Right, 911. Then he went on TV and recanted his statement.
There are certainly horrible law enforcers out there...for instance the Chicago cop that beat the crap out of the 125lb female bartender then had his buddies attempt to buy her off. But there are some good cops too. And, when you need their help, you should remember all the mindless tripe that you spew and that an internet tough guy you only are (not directed at 240 FWIW).

I never get into trouble so I wouldn't know. I'm not a shit disturber. But I have seen my share of cop stupidity. They can't solve a crime but yet it takes 10 cruisers to pull over some dumb 16 year old kid for doing 10 kilometers over the speed limit  :-\ Joke.

nah, I actually have police in my family and one of those FOP things.  I respect them and I'd sure help one if they ever needed it.  I was treated very rudely by one when I was 18, so I know there are bad seeds on the job.  But their field is a tough one and I respect what they do.

At the same time, nationwide police response time is 11 minutes on average.  IMO, any responsible person will make all arrangements possible to be in a position to protect himself and family for those 11 minutes.  Here in florida we have a lot of legal shootings where a junkie idiot will accost an armed civilian and get dead for it, and nobody ever loses sleep over it.

When I read this last week, I didn't comment on it but now some of your statements are just out of hand so here we go.
First off, the case will be thrown out as soon as it goes to court because without the initial probable cause to approach this gentlemen, they have no reason to arrest him, so the rest is bullshit after that.  Secondly, the officers actually did exactly what they were suppose to do and take the side of caution but once they knew he was a diabetic they should have un-handcuffed his ass and got him medical right away and did an incident report without arrest.  So yeah they fucked up and now they are going to pay for it but not because they beat him up or any of that bullshit, simply because when they realised they made the mistake they didn't take the time to make it right, they tried covering their ass by making an arrest.
Yeah yeah, I was a cop for close to ten years, I get it.

does anyone know what kind of drugs he was on? does anyone know if he had cocaine in his system? the wrote him a citation, that doesnt mean hes guilty of anything. the courts will figure out what to do with him.. its a very complicated issue -it should be sorted out in a courtroom..

cops are not doctors. how are they supposed to know if whatever medication he was taking would cause a person to go crazy?  is everyone here 100% positive he didnt have any illegal drugs in his system? what if he mixed insulin with crack -which caused him to go nuts?

send his ass to court and they can bring in experts to say what led him to attack a cop..they can do a blood test to see whats in his system

what if he shot the cop. would his "insulin shock" excuse him of murder too?

In a very telling study, it was found that the average cop's psychological profile most resembled that of a career criminal -- more so than any other profession.

Cops are the necessary evil of any society, including our own.  Unfortunately, it takes low-minded people to provide a barrier between reckless victimizers and the rest of society.
