Bodybuilder faces charges of assault
Diabetic 'Mr. Natural Universe' says he suffered from insulin shock
REDWOOD CITY — The reigning "Mr. Natural Universe" faces assault and resisting-arrest charges following a scuffle with police who thought the diabetic bodybuilder was intoxicated or high on drugs.
In fact, claims Doug Burns, 43, he was suffering from insulin shock — and now the Menlo Park bodybuilder is considering suing the Redwood City Police Department.
The incident, Burns recalled Tuesday, happened shortly after he entered a downtown movie theater in Redwood City on Sunday evening.
He was feeling dizzy and suffering from poor vision — symptoms of low blood sugar — so he made his way quickly to the theater's concession area.
A theater security guard who noticed that Burns was walking in circles tried to talk with him, but the bodybuilder had trouble communicating the situation to the guard, Burns said.
Burns, whose recollection of the events is hazy, recalled that the security guard escorted him down the theater's escalator. The next thing he remembers is falling on the pavement outside the theater.
According to police, two officers tried to speak with Burns. When the bodybuilder attempted to make his way back into the theater, one officer tried to block his path, said Capt. Chris Cessina.
"Mr. Burns shoved one of the officers backward and then took a fighting stance to fight the officer," said Cessina.
The officer tried to stun Burns with pepper spray and attempted to wrestle him to the ground with the help of another officer, said Cessina. However, Burns continued to fight, and three more officers were called in as back-up to handcuff the 207-pound bodybuilder.
"The officers were faced with someone who assaulted them, and they didn't have any time to check to see if his situation was a result of a medical condition," said Cessina.
When paramedics arrived, they noticed Burns' Medic Alert bracelet and administered an on-scene medical test which later confirmed that he was suffering from low blood sugar, Cessina said.
Burns was cited on assault and resisting-arrest charges and then taken to the hospital.
