I'm anxious to see Dorian's new line of supplements.  I just got 3 boxes of the DY approved pro-MRP for 50% off at Vitamin Shoppe today because they are clearancing it simply because of the old label (the exp date is 8/2007).  I predict that their sales will plummet once Dorian's Mug is removed from the label.

I'm going to hate myself for even responding to this, but YES!  A qualified MD with 30+ years of experience in dealing with the human metabolism does much more for building consumer brand confidence than a genetic freak pumped full gear.  I won't even get into the rationale for this from a marketing standpoint.  I'll just let the numbers do the talking.  MET-Rx, while owned by Connelly was a $100+ million dollar company.  The Dorian Yates approved company has never exceeded $10 million in annual sales.

In fact, NONE of the supplement companies started by former pros (Labrada, Gaspari, Dillet, etc.) has ever surpassed the revenues attained by MET-Rx.  Interestingly, after Connelly sold the brand it has completely tanked.

FYI, we did extensive consumer research at many of the companies I worked with (not just MET-Rx) on the value of using pro body building males/females as product endorsers.  The results were always consistent.  Female body builders caused a major negative reaction across all consumer segments.  Male bodybuilders were well perceived by young male teenagers and negatively perceived by most men/women in the 18-49 age range.

Hope that helps.

You're a fucking colombian tool! Your hero, Conelly, was a fvcking anesthesyologist, nothing more. He was an enterpreneuer (sp) who seize the oportunitty to explore a market that was at its begginning stage at the time, and for that precise reason the MET-RX company had a much bigger income than Dorian Yates approved. They got a fresh market, not yet blown away by a lot of bad rep like today's supp industry (see ephedrin, pro hormones, etc.).
Scott was just a big headed, moustached skinny guy who lifted weights in his free time and a mercenary visionary who invested in a new born industry to the masses, so to speak. By the way, good job on his part to help ruin, pull the plug on a fantastic bodybuilder's carrer, Paul deMayo's. What a stand up guy Connelly was. Hey, Yemeni, time to change the worn out knee pads!

Maybe for a guy 'in the know' like you, the credibility of a guy like Scott is prefered than Dorian's. But guys like you are the minority in this bizz. How about the average joe fan, walking down the aisles of an expo, and seeing 6 times Mr.O holding a tray with free samples form products of his OWN company, and by his side, Mr. moustache/big head Connelly, fragile as a feather, speaking about 'metamyosin'....who do you think these people would be more prone too?

Come on, man, you know better than that.....

Hmmm....you sound angry.  Either you worked for me and I fired you at some point, or you tried to work for me and I didn't hire you :-\

Yes, Scott was an anesthesiologist.  However, he has had a personal interest in human metabolism for his entire career, and has always been a huge fan of body building.  Because of that he has spent a better part of his career and millions of his own $$$ in metabolism/protein research.

At an expo, the average neophyte will be more attracted to a fitness bunny or pro than an MD...you are correct.  However, once there, most pros are more interested in selling their 8x10 pics than in explaining why a particular supplement works.  In fact most pros haven't got a clue about nutrition, metabolism, etc.  Every show I ever went to with MET-Rx, Connelly was standing right there, from beginning to end, answering questions.

Paul Demayo?  WTF are you talking about?  Scott paid him an ungodly amount of money, bought him a new car and took care of the guy.  Unfortunately, he was whacked and self-destructed.

Do you know what Scott is up to nowadays?  You’d be very surprised.  Unlike many of the entrepreneurs who made millions from this industry, he is not off living some sort of extravagant lifestyle.  He has created a charity foundation and put millions of his own money into it.  In the near future, he’ll be doing an interview right here on GetBig, where you can learn about this and much more.

If I stepped on you on my way up, my apologies.  I too have matured....somewhat ;D

Peace…

Back in 1993 at the Arnold Classic, I asked Scott Connelly at the Met-Rx booth what he thought of the importance of glycemic index in bodybuilding.  He asked me to explain why it would even be a concern, and once I told him the underlying theories that I'd just begun reading about at the time, he kinda snubbed it off as largely irrelevant, stating that a glass of kool-aid was basically to be viewed as no different than any other carbohydrate source in a gram-for-gram equivalency.  It perplexed me as to how Connelly could be so seemingly disinterested in the notion at the time, but looking back on it, I'm not sure he was entirely in error there.  Phillips surely went on to market the concept to it's maximum, though, didn't he?  That post-workout carbohydrate window thing coupled with the importance of glycemic index in choosing what carbs to throw in there and at other times of the day appealed to everyone's reason so strikingly that it immediately stuck like glue.  I don't even think it so important now, though.  The idea totally discounts where all the complex carbs from the pre-workout meal are by the time you're done, and has probably been why so many bodybuilders have stayed fatter than they've had to all these years.  "IF YOU DON'T EAT 75-100 GRAMS OF SIMPLE CARBS WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF YOUR WORKOUT YOU WILL LOSE MUSCLE!  YOU'LL BE EVEN SMALLER THAN YOU WERE BEFORE YOU WENT TO THE GYM!"  Bullshit.

The glycemic index topic is a hot one for Scott.  I've seen him get into some good heated debates with people over it, and royaly own them.  funny stuff...

So so.  They have found that unless someone's pet is not doing well, people are not willing to spend that kind of money on them.  Most think that the premium pet food brands in the grocery stores are good enough.  In truth, ther is some scary shiat in there...

I sure didn't choose to "debate" it with him!   ;D

I think I also asked him what kind of doctor he was and he said something about cardiology or some brand of cardiac care being his main background.

Ha ha ha.  I've got some stories regarding run-ins with people at expos...

I saw Bill Phillips standing in the corner of the 94 Olympia's expo, and I asked him if Dan "Dukaine" was going to be there...that's how I pronounced it because I'd only read his name, I'd never heard it pronounced "Dushane" by anyone that knew who he was.  Keep in mind I was just a 17-year-old kid at the time.  So he's like, "WHO?"  (like a complete dick)  I said it again.  He said, "You mean Dan DUCHAINE?"  I was like, "well, yeah...whatever?"  He's like, no, he's not here.  DICK.  ha ha  But that's before he'd really made it, but like the idea you just alluded to about "stepping on people on your way up," Mindspin, he was probably still just working out the kinks back then, so I'm not mad at him.  I doubt he'd act like that today...

That was also the same expo that I got Steve Brisbois cornered in his Hot Stuff booth and demanded that he "swear to God he was natural."  Ha ha ha.  I feel so bad for him now.  He squirmed and got pissed, as I kept insisting on him doing so, you know, because at the time, he was not only playing the natural angle, but the Christian one as well!  So he angrily snaps, "YOU DON'T DO THAT!"  "Why not?" I asked.  "YOU JUST DON'T!"  And he walked off.  And he was right...you just don't...or at least not when you understand more about the world...I don't wanna make somebody squirm when they're just trying to put food on their table...but that's also why you don't play the Christian/natural angle when you're marketing to kids (when you also happen to be full of shit)!   ;D

Ha ha ha!  funny shit.  Like most successful company heads from that time, I think Phillips was bi-polar and on some serious meds.  You never know what the mood was going to be.

This is not a first time Mindspin comes out as total jerk and then tries to cover it up. Ron, once again why is he a moderator?

Because, deep down, he's a big fan of "female" pro bodybuilders.

he he!  There was a man-face in my gym today.  It was bench pressing 225 for 10-12 reps and smelled like a man's locker room.  But, she was still very feminine of course...
