Are there any Aikido fighters in MMA? I know they will have to study other arts but Aikido was their primary martial art. I have not seen any, just curious?

Aikido is extremely hard to translate to combat arts. It is mostly defensive, no strikes really, a lot of small joint manipulation and the fact that it takes a very long time to become proficient in it. Although I always thought if someone could bring some of the aikido footwork it may be interetsing (IMHO).

Jason De Lucia claimed to be an Aikido fighter, but he also claimed to be a five animal guy as well. He fought in Pancrase.

Back in the early days, when Renzo just opened the academy, there were a lot of guys with really strong backgrounds in other martial arts who came in to see what BJJ was all about. The akido guys had it the worst. One guy with whom I eventually became friends was a 3rd degree blackbelt in akido, but was getting owned on the mat by guys like me who, at the time, had only been training BJJ for a few months.

What? You mean he wasn't able to pull of a nikyo on you? Are you telling me my parents wasted money sending me to class?

He was too busy defending the rear naked.

He actually knew a lot of cool joint manipulation stuff that could conceivably be used in self-defense situations, but, on the ground he was clueless.

With regard to wristlocks, I've seen them used in gi-tourneys. Guys with collar grips get their wrists bent back and have to tap. Edwardo Telles shows a wristlock sub in his Turtle Guard Series (I highly recommend it, especially for 30-and-older guys). Also, when I used to take privates w/ Shawn Williams, he would put them on me from the guard. I wouldn't tap, but I was forced to defend, leaving myself open for something else.

Fortunately for me, I was able to convince them to enroll me in judo later on. I think they wanted cheap child care during my elementary/middle school days.

Aikido is not functional in an MMA fight, plain and simple...

Aikido won't work, becuase, as someone mentioned, it's defensive. Gung Fu guys have the same problem. They are good at blocking, but block enough and you're bound to get hit.
Aikido is good for diverting an attack and running.

I'll bet the Judo came in handy when you started BJJ. When I started, I had a boxing and wrestling background (not very high level at either).

It took me awhile to learn the grips and grip breaks.

We are going to have Mike Swain in town to do a judo seminar for our school. He is in town visitng another olympian, Kevin Asano, who won silver in 1988. Judo and Jits are a perfect blend. Great counter to wrestlers, especially with the gi.

I started in 1996, too. At the time Matt Serra had only been doing bjj for a year, training with Craig Kukuk, who, in another case of getbig six degrees, is a childhood friend of Onlyme.

My 4 year son can defend himself better than that guy. That "master" could not believe he got hit in the mouth. That is an embarasment to Aikido. He should be ashamed of himself for even representing Aikido. He should go back to yoga or Tai Chi. A COMPLETE JOKE!
