What is the most importsnt position in football besides quarterback...

To me i think offensive tackle is the most important position...it aint sexy but without a good left tackle. you have nothin....

and on defense..i think its the middle linebacker...he is the one who holds the defense...of you can run over the mike LB your team is fucked

i ask because me and my friend had this argument on sunday...he said corner back is more important (he was a db) but i think you can cover up a sucky corner by running a cover 2 scheme but a bad middle linebacker will get your defense ran all over.

I would agree with some of this i guess. I don't think the QB is the most important person however. I think it's the offensive line.

If you have a good OL, you can pretty much do anything and they will make your QB, RB's and WR's look good.

yeah i agree...the o line is the most important part of the team..i was goin specifically for the position

but the o line can make a running back go from 1500 yards to barely 1000. (see Edgrin James)

you are right..because the game has evolved now to favor passing offenses...with the 5 yard no touch rule so you have to be a better corner these days...but i thought historacaly you have to stop the run to win this game and you do that with a good MLB

It's hard to say any one position is most important, but putting my personal bias aside I'd say QB. I think you can look at a number of Super Bowl winners over the years and attribute their success in large part to their QB: Doug Williams, Montana, Aikman, Warner, Brady, Manning, etc.

Off the top of my head, I can only think of one QB who was pretty average who won a Super Bowl in recent memory: Dilfer.

But fullbacks are the biggest studs on field. No question about it.

The lines

Offensive line. You can have the best qb in the world, he ain't doing shat if he cant get some type of protection. You can have the most talented rb in the world, without holes to run through he wont do shat. Before I say this let me state I do NOT think LT is overrated. the guy is amazing. I just wonder why more credit is not given to his line. The guy is great, don't get me wrong! But we all know with a sub par line lt could not do his thing. it is like a chain reaction. No line = no protection for qb = no time to make throws/read d = inability to stretch field = stacked box =no running game = no clock control.

Defensive Line. These guys keep the opposing offense off the field if they work efficiently and pressure the qb. By keeping the opposing offense off the field as much as possible it gives the home team the ability to score unanswered points and milk the clock. The line is especially important in the 3/4. They pressure the qb and plug the running lanes so lbs can make plays. Which does not allow your foe to control the clock with the run, and creates havok on the pass due to the pressure.

Without good blocking the Qb doesn't get the ball to the skill player, who in turn doesn't get you the necessary yards much less the score.

Cornerback is a close second. One on one, on an island. On obvious passing downs, you have to mimic the movements of the receiver. Give him too much space, and he picks up chunks of yards at a time. Jam the receiver and he gets by you, it's 6 points. The advantage goes to the receiver every time. He knows where he's going, the cornerback doesn't. Easily the most athletic position on the field. Backpeddling, turning and opening your hips to match the receivers stride.(who in turn can make a sudden cut or stop altogether) Very tough.

Yes you are right about the CB being the most athletic position. But say in an obvious passing down you have an average corner...you can go to a soft cover 2 and the corner doesn't have to be awesome. All he has to do is cover the flats and pass him on. I still think middle backer brings the intangibles to your defense. He brings toughness, is essential in run stopping the run as well as zone coverage across the middle of the fiend (which is the easiest throw for a quarterback to make) and that nets chunks of yards and keeps the chains moving. But with a solid middle backer the run is stopped and the shallow intermediate crossing routs are eliminated once the MLB smacks the shit out of that crosser.

Im just saying, you can hide a so/so corner, but there ain't no hiding no sucky MLB because shit comes at him every play.

How about the Center. He usually calls all the schemes on the O-line.

The hardest position on the field to me is corner though.

yeah i played in high school and college...but couldnt play no more after that because i had too many concussions...i wouldnt have went pro...maybe arena ball would maybe be the highest i would be able to play.... but i played my whole life.

Well you do have a point in todays football game with the new rules and all to make the game more "exciting"...The NFC is so pass happy you have to have a good secondary or you will be exposed...the AFC IMO is still a running conference.

O Line..it can make a middle of the road RB look like Payton, and a QB out of a backup. Without the Hogs moving the pile it's all just smoke and mirrors.

2nd, Secondary...I know everybody will say D line but I think a really good secondary will make a bad D line better.

I disagree a little. I think they work hand in hand. If the QB has all day the WR can eventually get open even with good CB and vice versa, good coverage allows for some sacks. A good pass rush negates the need for super human CB's like Deon in his day.
