why size does not equate to being jacked
« on: June 08, 2007, 03:35:57 PM »
At some point a lie got started.  The lie states that the stronger you can become the bigger you'll be.

WRONG.

In fact, people that are the strongest in the gym, often look the worst.  The reason is that they are built for strength which means, short limbs and wide frames.  This has nothing to do with muscle belly shape and seperation.

It's seperations between the different muscles as well as the shape and length of the muscle belly that makes people look "jacked".  It's the reason why I can't bench more than 315 but yet look much bigger in the chest than guys that can rep 315...

I am still trying to get guys to understand that same notion...I mean I basically ask them would you rather look like Billybob in the corner over there that can use 350lbs on sets of 10 yet has an amazingly discusting midsection and no indication of muscle other than looking like a "thick" guy, but looks just like every other average overweight Joe out there...Or would they rather have a healthier look to them and have something to show for the hard work they put in the gym other than being able to rep 350lbs....The moral of the story is that there is Bodybuilding and then there is Powerlifting...Chose which is your goal and quit hounding the guys that look better than you about how they can't lift as much weight as you can...I guess in the end it is the only thing overweight powerlifters types have over bodybuilder types.... :'(

Just an observation:
For years I did "bodybuilding" workouts...Hitting the muscle from all angles, full range of motion, perfect form, etc. etc.   It wasn't until I started to try and lift heavier that I saw any real results...Greater strength does equal more muscle, you just have to keep your diet in check...And remember, strength is relative. It's been my experience that there are not too many dudes that can't throw up 315 on the bench that look impressive...

you wont build big chest doing bench period. if i concentrate on flyes, moderate weight, burning muscle excersizes my chest grows noticably every week.

hahahahaha, that post is code for "he's been stalled at 155 for 5 reps on the bench press for two years straight and has given up and has been using a pair of 40's for 6 on the flat flye now".

well

there's nothing you can do about leverages, fiber types, motivation, cns, etc, etc, but it's still the same for everyone.

the best way for an individual to get bigger muscles is to move more weight in decent form.

I get a better brain-muscle connnection doing dumbell flyes and dumbell presses. when i do heavy bench my front shoulders do almost all the work, cant stop that.

hahaha, you're a moron.

Isolation movements are a waste of time unless you are doing them after heavy compound movements.

trust me son, i have 7 years of training expiriance, i bought a dumbell when i was 11 years old for god sakes. if your chest is sore days after a chest workout, then you did a good job. for me personally flat benching only builds my shoulders, i dont feel the chest on them.
