Quick q regarding deadlifts -->
« on: July 01, 2007, 08:15:29 AM »
Hey guys 1 q.....

Whats the difference between normal deadlifts (starting from the floor with full movements of you whole

body)

and deadlifts from a rack, starting from the middle of the movement.....

Which is best for back development?

Thanks!

most here will say do them from the rack, or a few pins high. i pesonally feel doing them the proper way from the floor gives me the best results from my back all the way up to my traps

WHat kind of build do ya have and how old are you. If your built for it and young, and have any thoughts of a PL comp, do plenty from the floor. But, Low Back Injuries are for keeps.

Some Plers never/rarely do full range DL's except at comp.
MANY Plers never do full range Bench except comp. 2 boards at the most.
Full range w/ MAX Lbs will kill most dudes joints in time. Want longevity in Power? Use Partial ROM and
learn to use support gear (I aint talk'n Juice).

I rarely deadlift from the floor anymore (done competing) and don't encourage my clients to do it either.  I usually have them go down to about 90 degrees and then pull back up.

RAck deads are great for mass, power and moving some weight but don't abuse them.  Just a little sprinkle to mix it up.

When I was powerlifting in college I would go WAY overboard and do 5 X 5 on full deads and then 5 X 5 on rack deads (with about 20% more weight).  Overkill...though I did hit some PR's that still stand.

They are real tough on the low back for dudes that aint built for it, and some guys that's tick as a brick
get probs too. Raising it up a bit into the Mech Advantage zone can still build strength and beef.
Rounding that back is bad news.

Most guy's can handle about 80-100lbs more when the rack pulls are started just at or slightly above knee height. If starting from 4 or less inches below top lockout position, than at least 130-150lbs can be handled. (might try shrugging from that 4" position...might amaze yourself as to just how strong those traps are). The advantage to both is the developing of more power and muscular size. Traps & back/lats get that thick, rugged look. If your a BB'er, than really no need to start lifts from the floor. Keep the reps BB'ing reps, from the  6 to 12 rep range. If starting from the floor, or even on a raised standing platform for greater DL'ing depth, pay attention to complete warm-ups and form from that floor position. That can be the danger zone for a lot of well meaning BB'ers and lifters. Rushing the weight, using too much too soon, can also cause problems.

The SLDL is an outstanding exercise for building lasting back strength. Do not round the back and keep the bar almost rubbing against the legs during this exercise. Some guy's will let the bar drift out and away from the body too far. Bad point for leverage  which can result in unneeded strain and other injuries. The GM'ing is another great lower back exercise. Good Luck.

Half deadlift/shrugs was an exercise often performed by Bob Paris.
