Portable generator
« on: August 06, 2007, 10:28:45 AM »
Do you own a portable or back up generator in case of a power outtage?

btw, the next time you go to the International Auto Show, visit the Honda section and you'll see these portable models on display.

We've got a non-portable one and a full size gas tank that's hooked up permanently to the house and gas grill.  When the power to the house goes out, 8 seconds later the generator kicks in.

Awesome!  How many gallons is your gas tank?  How long can your generator go on, say, one gallon of gas?  How much gas is in the tank when not in use?  I had a portable generator and was told that it should basically be empty when not in use as refined gasoline (unless you use a preservation additive) does not keep well over long periods of time.

Did you install this generator or did it come with the house?  How many times a year do you use it?  Are you in an area that loses power periodically like a hurricane belt (Florida, for example).

Not sure how many gallons...the tank is really big like one you see on a farm.

Not sure how long the generator can go on a gallon of gas but it has run for over a day until the power went back on.  It's always got fuel in it..I think we've only had fuel added a couple times and we've had it for about 9 years or so.

We installed it.  It's not hugely needed IMO but it is really nice to have.  I'd say it only goes on (other than it's weekly(?) automatic testing when it runs for about 15 min) about 5-10 times per year when the power goes out and normally that is not for very long....sometimes it's just minutes.  The power co. is pretty good about getting things on as soon as possible.

hahah, I feel so left out. I want a generator!!  I could put in the roof of my building and string down a wire through my window. Then the next blackout in NYC I will have lights!  But what if someone steels my generator?  :-\

I'm convinced the best exchanges on this board happen in private messages.   If I combined my PM with my private email, I'd have a tell all book!  ;D

Portable generator thefts were very common in FL a couple years ago during the hurricanes.  The thieves would break into backyard sheds and garages and steal any generator in plain sight.  Residents were warned to conceal generators when they were not in use.

• at one point, power was out for 14 days and the local cities installed generators at major intersections to power the traffic signals.  Overnight the thieves would steal the city installed generators and the intersections were without power.  The cities had to install new generators and bolt them into the concrete or put locks on them.  Some even had a police guard.

• there was one story in the local newspaper and on TV about a man who purchased a generator at Lowe’s. As he was in the parking lot and about to put it in his car he was robbed at knife point.  He had  to go home and tell his wife that someone stole the generator before he could bring it home.  :'(
