Sam is a great lifter but that squat was high and there was no pause.

i guess in that Fed they allow this.

Still a strong bastard any way you look at it.

You don't need to pause in the squat in any federation?

It was not high.  I witnessed it personally from the front row.

PAUSE??

Unfortunately, when "powerlifting" is associated with a lift....it will automatically be discounted by someone on the internet, especially if gear is involved.

Byrd's squat is VERY impressive....insane how quick he comes up with it.

Capt. Kirk's double with 1,000lbs is one of my fav lifts of all time.

A LOT of people suffer from the misconception that all powerlifters are fat.  In the 242 lbs and less weight classes most of the lifters are quite lean.  Why?  Well, for the obvious reason that muscle moves the load, not body fat and if you are capped on what you can weigh you want as much lean muscle tissue as possible.

Yes, the superheavies carry a lot of body fat but that is because they can.  Increasing one's body weight when training with resistance will increase what one can lift.  That has been proven over and over by lifters all over the world.

even up into the 275s that's true, i'd say. here's a pic of konstantin konstantinovs, a 275'er and currently the holder of the third biggest deadlift behind bolton and benni.

3. The lifter must bend the knees and lower the body until the top of the thigh at the hip, NOT the hip joint, is lower than the top of the kneecap. Locking and unlocking of the knees after demonstrating control of the weight is not defined as a descent. But, the knees must be locked at the-start and completion of the lift. Only one descent per-attempt is allowed.

4. The lifter must recover at will, from the deepest point of the squat, without double bouncing or any downward movement (stopping is allowed) to an upright position with the knees locked. If the lifter's feet move or if the lifter takes a step but regains control alone, the lift is good, as long as they are not assisted by a spotter and the situation does not appear dangerous.

I stand corrected...it states "stopping is allowed" although i usually give a press command to my lifters when they get deep enough. when you don't have a mirror it's hard to tell how deep you are with lots of weight on your back.

"top of the thigh at the hip, NOT the hip joint, is LOWER than the top of the kneecap"...i'd need to see a better angle to call that one, that is why you have 3 judges.

i've competed and judged meets for over 7 years...

i'm just used to USAPL and their strict rules.

Even one of louies friends said it was high.

Captain Kirk, 1000lbs for a double,"I wanna hold it!" LOL!

Captain Kirk hitting 1000 x 2 is an awesome video.

But here's the real answer...http://www.criticalbench.com/Lee-Moran-Squat.htm

just my two cents...

if you've even been to a powerlifting meet anywhere in the world you would know that you don't have to pause at the bottom of a squat.

this is the point.

IF he actually competed and judged meets as he said he did then he would most definitely know that you don't need to pause at the bottom of the lift.

Are you quite sure Kirk is not wearing a squat suit?

Oh, and Sam did his lift at 198 lbs.  Kirk was a touch heavier... ;)

Not to diminish Kirk's accomplishment, he was an INCREDIBLE squatter.

He was wearing a singlet nothing like today's gear.  Sam is a good geared lifter but not sure if he could even walk out 600.  The mono-lift has ruined the squat almost as much as canvas suits that stand on their own.

Look at Kirk's depth in his squat as well as foot position......the mono lift allows lifters to spread their legs resulting in something that doesn't even resemble what "used" to be a squat....it's impressive to have over 1000lbs on your back, but it ain't the same as a squat.

my two cents

tom was obviously a great squatter and had the legs to prove it but there's no way you can even begin to compare 485lbs to 1050lbs regardless of equipment.
