I am touring several Asian islands and currently in Tokyo. The hotel gym was as well equiped as the lady boys I saw in Thailand, so with that in mind I ventured out to one with dunbells higher than 25Ibs. I was refused on the basis that I had tattoos on my forearms. I offered to put on my long sleeve top but no luck - the tatts were still in attendance, covered or not.

I then proceeded to conduct my first plyometric workout for years - within my hotel 

Off to Hong Kong tomoz. Does anyone know if the same rule applies there?

no, this is not unusual at all.  tattoos are associated with yakuza,  Japanese organized crime.  Most gyms have signs stating this.

Tattoos in Japan are still a big No No simply because they go hand in hand with the Yakuza (http://www.crimelibrary.com/gangsters_outlaws/gang/yakuza/1.html) the Japanese Mafia, unless you want to be an extreme rebel or are in the Yakuza you are NOT getting a Tattoo in Japan.
I have heard from people being refused entry to restaurant and Hotels because of their tattoos so I can fully understand why you were unable to go to the gym.
I have both arms and the back done as well, so I think I'll had a hard time as well
