Chiropractic solution for aching back?
« on: September 03, 2007, 03:16:07 PM »
Hey, I need some opinions from anyone who has ever been to the chiropractor for your back before..

I have never been.

Do you think it's helpful to deal with recurring pain due to spinal compression of the lumbar vertebrae?

I've heard a lot of advertising for spinal decompression.  Have you looked into that?

Depends  :-\

and yes, I've been to several different ones over the years.  I think it depends on the chiros technique as to whether you'll have success or not and also if you heed their exercise advice.  Like any doctor, chiros can choose to specialize in various modalities.  There are over 100 modalities to choose from, so finding a that works for you could be a challenge.  Just like going to a GP over a specialist; you might get lucky and then again...  :-\

hi prin,

jake mentioned that some people get benefits from spinal decompression but there is more to it according to him.  i am not in dire pain so it's not an emergency.  i have an appointment with my doctor and he is going to send me for an MRI.  i might have to wait 6 months to get one (canadian health care system) but then we will have a clear picture of what the issue is and how to go about fixing it (either treatment or surgery)

at this point i just try to work around it and i continue to rehab it with sepcific exercises.

so I had a chronic nerve pinch in my neck (C6-C7) really effected things. Had all sorts of pain/numbness/burning/aching through my left arm/shoulder. Saw a Dr. he sent me to physical therapy and that didn't work so I got the disc fused surgically.

I've been to a Chiro in the past, and it's kinda nice but you have to keep going

are you feeling pain in other places or just the back?

only between L4 & L5... no sciatica or numbness... it just gets aggravated easily and when it does i have to endure 4-5 days of soreness... the only treatment i use is ice (no shitty gimmicks... just ice in a Styrofoam cup like we used when i played ball) and stretching and a yoga routine for strengthening that area.

Hey WOO,
Does the pain sensation seem to be off to one side as opposed to in the middle of the lower back?

Dang.
Sorry, man.
I was hoping it was off to the side.
Some people – myself included – often mistake sacroiliac problems (since the sacrum is so close to the lumbar region) or even hip problems & pelvic rotations as being a “back” problem.
Most chiro’s can easily and effectively fix those.

I would still recommend chiropractic consultation.
It took me a while to find the right one, but a good chiropractor is definitely worth it.
I’ve been amazed at some of the things mine has been able to treat.

As far as decompression, I’ve found that different chiro’s have differing opinions on the issue. For example, decomp. was a really big “issue” that my former Dr. “pitched” at his office. He had all of the special equipment, informational literature and videotapes that played nonstop in the waiting room. He may have really believed in it, or maybe it was just a bullshit gimmick to make more $$.

I asked my current chiropractor about spinal decompression (in a different context) just last week. He told me that, with rare exception, there is no need – at least for me – for fancy decomp. therapy.
And I trust his information and opinion because his adjustments are more effective and last longer than the other guy’s.

Good luck.

Chiro?
Ya, it's worth a shot. It got me several more years out of a bad back.
Aleve "naproxin sodium" was also helpfull for years.

Acupuncture (electro acupuncture esp) is also worth a shot. It dont do much for my low back, but has helped w/ upper back issues (Spasm) as well as tendinitis.
Deca and HGH help many PPL w/ joint issues, but do nothing for my low back.

I'd seriously weigh your love of squats & deads at this point and consider only limited range movements on machines.
When your a decade or 2 down the road it may make a big difference.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck w/ the back man.
