That is extremely hard, and very, very impressive.

May look ghey and all, but try it out if you doubt me. The handstand pushups are hard enough, but the full parallel extension pushups are beyond impressive. The amount of ab, back and shoulder strength required to do those is obscene.....It is not so much the 'push' aspect, but the suspension of the body is murderous.

yeah it's Jordan Jovtchev possibly the world's best rings specialist.  This is his warm-up, his strength on the iron cross skills is even crazier.

the dude is an absolute master.

I actually met a dude at my college gym several years ago that was a gymnast.   Nice guy, trained hard and could do all those gymnasticky movements.   We trained with weights together on 2 occassions (neither time was planned....we just happened to be training the same bodyparts with similar movements so we worked together for the most part).   Now, I couldn't do one handstand pushup to save my life, but that guy could do em all day long.   On the flipside, his max lifts with weights were some of my warm-up sets.   I don't have a point and I take nothin from the guy's athleticism, but I didn't find his strength in terms of lifting weights anything but average despite his gymnastics background.  Oh yeah, his build was very similar to the guy in the youtube clip (if not better).

Impressive. At least national-level competitor, and maybe international: they make it look (too) easy. I was just a hacker compared to guys like this.  :-\

Moves like the parallel pushups, the real strength is demanded from the abs and lower back, the actual demands on the delts/tri/chest etc are not as high comparitively as to the "core". The strain is there on the shoulder area yes, as you are suspending your entire weight, but it is not *that* bad..............it's your freakin abs/lower back having to suspend your whole body that is insanely difficult.

When I first started training the planche type movements my midsection used to be shattered after. Laughing was agony.

It's a very specific type of functional strength.

This is a great explanation and makes sense.   The gymnast I trained with had an excellent core and could flip and suspend himself all day long, but when we hit the heavy iron I owned him....wasn't tryin to, just the way it was.

this isn't really true...straight arm strength movements demand tremendous shoulder strength.  Not all gymnasts, even high level ones have the power to excel at the strength centric apparatuses like the rings.

Thanks, and same with me really. I myself can't exactly lift any huge impressive numbers, I sometimes train with a friend pro bb girl, who brutally owns me in the gym, but she can't do any of the fitness type moves I can. Like MasterBlaster said, it is a specific functional type of strength.

Straight arm yes, not like I can do it lol, but I can only begin to imagine the demands on the delts. The 'pushup' type moves, or parallel holds I personally find it is very much core. No empirical evidence to this, just what I find from doing them. Thanks for the link btw, nice vid.

Somewhat ontopic, has anyone ever used the rings for chins? My brother is into that now and raves about it, and I was thinking of slapping some in my gym. Opinions?

rings are great for strength training.  allows you to move in multiple planes, so when you do pullups you can spread the rings as you pull up.  the iron cross skills are great for bringing up shoulders and lats.

And the key word is "functional" and thats why I say he proabably stronger than ANYONE on this board.

Gymnast=Gay
Bodybuilder (who poses in oil for other men in skimpy underwear, which are sometimes rolled in to see the whole butt)= not gay

Gymnast (who spends years perfecting a talent or art) = Gay
Bodybuilder (spend $2000 to "compete" against other men who spend the same amount on drugs to win a $4 trophy) = not gay

Gymnast (something really few people have the coordination to do and requires a high degree of skill) = Gay
Bodybuilder (something that requires only genetics, drugs, and maybe 6 months at a gym to get results) = Not Gay

Hope this helps. ;)
