coach is a funny guy.

personal trainer, but it seems like everything he tries to pontificate on, he knows shit about.

anyone with a clue about strength training knows that there is only one way to train for strength and that is with weights. nothing else come close (btw, body weight is still a weight ::)) ie muscle contracts against greater loads it gets stronger, a no brainer really.

now, if you're talking about skill, agility, balance, speed, power, endurance, etc, etc, then those things are different matters.

coach, i've tried bud, but you are either a gimmick or you're so full of shit it's not even funny anymore.

Let me ask you, if a person walks into a gym that has never lifted before, how would you start them out?

I would first laugh at them for being small and inferior.

Hey genius, if you have been following the thread, and reading, you would have read that I was telling danielson to THINK, i haven't changed my tune one bit. Just the fact that you have to ask what ABSOLUTE strength is tells me you know nothing. Thanks for coming, tip your waitress on the way out.

You haven't answered my question yet Mr. Expert.

If he did say pound for pound, this thread wouldn't exist. He actually thinks that lil fella is stronger overall than some 350 pound behemoths :o

This is a ridiculous argument.  If you put the gymnyst guy under 405 he'd get crushed.  Likewise a 350lb guy probably could not hit an Iron cross.  There is a difference between being strong and being able to have total muscle control and manipulate your own bodyweight.

I believe that Coach may have mis-spoke when he said:
Funny thing is, he's literally stronger than anyone on this board!!

It is an impressive feat, but could the little guy walk up and deadlift 600lbs?  I'm guessing no.

For ABSOLUTE strength, yes you are!

hahaha, so you admit that the gymnast isn't actually the strongest? he's got... what... "functional" strength?

"functional strength" is code for "weak, but athletic". it's what people call a guy who can't bench 200 pounds but can climb rocks, someone who can't squat their own body weight but can walk on their hands.  ::)

if we define "functional" as "designed for or adapted to a function or use", then ALL strength is functional because it's geared specifically toward the task it's trained for! wolfy has functional strength because he's a bench presser, being able to climb a mountain or do a handstand pushup wouldn't get him fuck all because the "function" he's aiming for is a big bench press.

now you could argue for "useful" strength, but what the hell does that mean? how many times in life do you need to be able to do a planche pushup or a backflip? the only time someone needs strength is for moving heavy shit, and in cases like that a powerlifter's a hell of a lot more "functional" than a gymnast.

years ago when my family was moving, we needed a piano to get moved. my stepdad's friend was this big fat fucker named mike, and this big bastard moved the piano all by himself. hoisted the damn thing up into the truck without help. he couldn't do a pullup to save his life, but he picked up an upright piano (so it wasn't a gigantic thing that weighed 800 pounds, but still).

so at the end of the day, whose strength is "functional"? the guy who can do a one-armed pullup or a cross on the rings but can't pick up a keg of beer, or the guy who can carry two of them up a flight of stairs?

::)

Great post.....I remember back in college I was out with some friends at a bar and we were shooting pool next to a table of guys, acouple of which were in sleeveless attire and were walking on their hands and backflipping to impress the chicks.   Anyway, they're moving around with their ILS and talkin a big game, but I didn't pay em any attention and kept playing.   Well, you know how pool balls sometimes get stuck in tables and you gotta shake or lift an end of a table to get em loose?   That happened while I was playin with a friend so I picked up the end of the table about a foot and the ball came loose and we finished our game and I went to grab another beer.   When I came back a few minutes later a couple of the girls who were with us were playing and one of my friends came over and said, "dude, while the chicks were playing the sleeveless guys were flirting and flipping for em, but one of the pool balls got stuck so one of the sleeveless guys went over all cocky and tried to lift the table and it wouldn't budge.  His friend came to help him and together they lifted it about 4 inches off the ground."

Ergo saepta pudicitia agunt nullis spectaculorum illecebris, nullis conviviorum irritationibus corruptae.

exactly

functional strength depends on what function you're using it for.

fact is, strength is functional if it allows you to perform your intended function.
