Blood pressure
« on: September 24, 2007, 12:07:20 AM »
My blood pressure is 160 over 80.
In the old days they said only the bottom one (pressure when the heart is relaxed) is important and not really the top one (pressure when the heart pumps), now they say both are important.
My wife recons maybe it is higher because my heart is stronger from all the weight training and cardio work because my lower one is perfect.
My wife did say this is only guessing.
She says many athletes don't fall into the normal category with many things as normal is usually for sedentary people.
Like BMI for instance, I have visible abs but I am over weight according to my BMI
Any views on this.

The upper one (160) is too high... It should be in the 110-120 range. 130-140 if you did a brisk run. 160 is of concern...

when your training intensity. your body is also under a recovery state and can do  weird things when its under stress.  you should try to take your blood pressure everytime you go to the groccary store. Most store have a blood pressure machine for people to use. you want to see if its stays the same or goes up or down. because it might be the  "whitecoat" fact. in other words it might be that your nervous that your in the doctors office. you might want to take out some salt and see if it lowers or  get a supplement like cranberrys .

much props for addressing this most people/BBers wouldn't trip about it until its too late

160 is HIGH
80 is borderline high

Could be any number of reasons, but you should consult your physician.

120/80 use to be considered normal but now some doctors have lowered that a bit. People who are in top physical shape will have lower heart beats a minute, something between the low 40's and 50's. Some take this as a sign of good blood pressure, but this is not always the case. Some people think that by working out often will make the heart stronger and this will lower the blood pressure. But this also is not always the case.  A strong heart does not always mean there is no danger from high blood pressure. I would guess a lot of BB'ers have  high reading and do not know it. Take a look at Cutler some time. His face looks like a red light beacon even when at normal rest. One of the main hints of high blood pressure. PL's , in the heavier clesses, have been noted for high blood pressure.

That 160/80 would be consider being in the red zone with regards to high blood pressure (pressure/force the passing blood extends against the blood vessel walls). The top reading  would be of more concern to a doctor. There is no perfect reading, for each of us differ. Family history, mental stress, drinking/drugs, weight, etc all have a bearing. High blood pressure is pretty easy to control now a days, just have to know what to do and take.. Might want to visit a doctor for a checkup. He may advise you to pick up one of those home blood pressure kits to monitor your reading on a daily bases. When you are more relaxed. Good Luck.

I am a resident,
the systolic is now more assoc. with heart disease etc.

normal is less than 130.  160 is high, it does not mean your heart is stronger.  Cut the salt, do more cardio, quit smoking and see a doc.  You may need BP meds.  this is not something you want to play with.  HTN can lead to heart attacks, stroke, blindess, kidney problems, erectile dysfunction, etc etc.

1 thing where did you get it checked at?  cuffs too small lead to falsly elevated numbers.
you are gay.

I got a blood pressure machine recently.
Given to my wife by a rep ( my wife is in the endocrine industry and often get this stuff for free)
My blood pressure in normally spot on so this has me worried, if things are not OK in a month I will check it out by a doc.
By the way my BF is fine, I watch my salt, have not smoked in 12 years, go easy on the salt and I do cardio 3 to 4 times a week...... so  ???

glad for boyfriend is ok.

just kidding, but was that one isolated reading or is that happening everyday?  if everyday, check it somewhere else, and see if you are getting the same reading.

It stayed high, till my wife asked to stop all weight traing supps other than protein.
It is now 139 over 70.
I think it could be my pre work out booster it is a local brand that is very very high in stimulents.
I will take it next week just see if my BP goes up, if it is that I will saty away from it.
The only other supp I take is STAK2 and I cant really see that boosting my BP.
