Is it because you "own your blackness"?     It was a word created by slave owners yet your group perpetuates the word.  Changing the spelling doesn't mean anything.  It was a word used to mention a disliked group of people.  If you hear those words,  you still know who the group is.

Re: Blacks, I really think it deals with a white person saying it.  I know a lot of football players who let Samoans and other Polynesians say it.  I once though it was because they were teammates but you never hear white dudes saying it.  Even more so, you hear PRs and Dominicans saying it.  Granted Dominicans have some black in them but I would still think that could be an issue.  I think it's funny though because you hear black people talk about "those dirty beeners" or "those fucking chink drivers" but never consider what those things mean to groups.  We still call women "girls" and "twats" and they hate it but they don't have the uproar black do.
