White Rice vs Brown Rice
« on: November 01, 2007, 03:01:07 PM »
What are the main advantages to eating brown over white rice? I just looked up the GI on white and it was lower than brown. Whats the deal people.

http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/foods/grains/gigl.html

"The complete milling and polishing that converts brown rice into white rice destroys 67% of the vitamin B3, 80% of the vitamin B1, 90% of the vitamin B6, half of the manganese, half of the phosphorus, 60% of the iron, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids."

Thanks Candizzle. The thing is since every site has something different, how do you know which one is right? oh and by the way I know brown is more nutritious that white, but I like the taste of white better.

The GI of any food is usually useless as far as bodybuilding goes except at post-workout.

White rice is processed, and brown rice is not............processed food sucks.

gi is useless is caloric intake is unchanged. true. BUT, consuming foods with low gi tend to contribute to a lower caloric intake because they stay in the blood stream for a longer duration of time, tus delaying the hunger signals from being sent to the brain .....

You're only understanding part of the picture Candi.  The GI of a food is almost useless unless it is ingested alone on basically an empty stomach.  The whole puzzle changes when protein and fat is introduced to the mix/meal.  Learn more about GI and more importantly GL (glycemic load) at mendosa.com

Right on Princess....finally someone with a solid answer.

Most bodybuilders eat food combos (protein + carbs) so glycemic load will be of more importance. Even white rice slows down a bit when ingested with protein and/or fats.

I have genetically high cholesterol and my gastroenterologist advised me to switch from eating white rice to brown due to the body processes "white" foods (white pastas, breads etc) into higher amounts of cholesterol as opposed to whole wheat breads and brown (unprocessed) rice.

ingested chol has little effect on chol, i would be more worried about sat fat increasing chol biosynthesis in the liver.

I'm pretty sure that's what I just said, maybe it came out like ingested cholesterol, but that's not what I was referring to =)

brown rice and white rice is basically the same thing, but white rice has been bleached so it strips all the nutritional value out of it.
