any tear possibilities while dling?
« on: November 06, 2007, 12:22:05 PM »
I was wondering if there are any possibilities of tearing something while doing dealdifts...

Always when i deadlift my arm with the underhand grip (my "weak" arm - left) seems to have a lot of stress from the movement....and im always cautious when going heavy....

Should i be concerned?

Bicep, hamstring, forearm?

Your biggest concern should be your knees and lower back

So am I.  You can have problems and tear it.  Vince Basile tore his bicep with 600lb deadlift.  I had wierd strains and bicep bruising when I was deadlifiting heavy.

Stick with a double overhand grip for deadlifts.

I know 3 guys who tore their bicep maxing out on deadlifts with a over/under grip.

the rotation of the palm places alot of stress on the bicep because the bicep helps control the rotation of the hand to a degree.

Ok...thanks guys.... ;)

Is it a good idea to change arms positioning? i mean have the right underhand instead of the left and left overhand.....

yes there is always a possibility, but if your a natural i find it very high unlikely tho. Personally i never do the under/over grip....2 reasons: i feel it twists my back a bit+underhand grip puts alot stress right on the biceps. instead when i go really heavy and my grip cant handle the weight i use straps and a overhand grip.

they key (for protecting biceps) when you start the movement is that you arms should be straight....if they arent and you pull a heavy weight from the floor (specially with the mixed grip) bad things could happen to your biceps.

obviously there are other dangers when deadlifting: lower back, hamstrings etc..as cap86 mentioned.

personally i think if your a bodybuilder you should mostly focus on rack deadlifts (starting the movement just below your knees or so)
75% of the time and do regular deadlifts wth medium weights of the floor with a wide grip the remaining 25%.

Just stick with double overhand and use straps for bodybuilding.

I can easily handle a hundred lbs or better with the over under grip but the double overhand you can still tear the bicep. Just do what someone else suggesting and pull with your arms straight and as relaxed as you can get. The biggest concern is always a bicep tear but your hams can go just as fast.

This is why you perfect your form FIRST like you should do with EVERY exercise and build off it. That way when you get to heavier shit it's so engrained you don't have to worry about it and just perform the lift.

Great advice......work up in weight slowly over time, keep form textbook perfect, avoid maxing out too often or at all for that matter.

Of course.  Anything's possible.  There are too many variables involved, though, for anyone here to make a reasonable prediction about the likelihood of YOU tearing something.

A few more pics that will make you want to stop training and take up checkers!!  :)

1960`s powerlifting legend George Frenn has squatted over 800 pounds but in this pic he dioes a mere 605 pounds.
The catch......his leg is in a cast.

Talk about determination!!

Some serious weight!!

The main reason for tearing during deadlifts (which actually both Nash and and Mike Ruggiera were unfortunate to experience over the last few weekends), is usually that the arm isn't completely straight/locked out throughout the pull, ie you keep it in a slightly curled position.

Two reasons for that IMO:

1. Grip not strong enough.

2. Not flexible enough in the arm.

These are just my thoughts though.

i popped my hamstring doing these a few weeks ago... my advise would to be throughly warmed up before, 5 to 10 on the treadmill with some good stretching afterwards..... keep your reps above 5 too

ive had a niggling problem with my right bicep for some time now, never thought it could be down to the overhand grip on these... might just dump them all together when im back
