Yes they DID foresee it.
The history of man and government has been like a broken record...
Liberty was a NEW idea.
That is why they did so much to protect it in the constitution. However, liberty has a price, I think you know what that is.
Government is brute force that we all agree to give to one or more bodies with the soul purpose of protecting individual liberty.
But when we start to use government to solve problems it is a violation of that principle. The consequences are EASILY predicted.
Before Jefferson died he saw that the spirit of 1776 had died and he stated that he was glad that he would not be around to see it. He knew the people were becoming complacent, and that erosion of liberty is the only result.
That maybe be what Jefferson wanted, but he couldn't foresee the world as it is today. People on welfare, unwilling to work, everything is so politically correct now, and the 24 hour news cycle. People are more concerned with the President getting a blowjob in the White House than the President breaking the Constitution over and over and claiming Executive Privilege. Talking points are more important than the Bill of Rights in today's world.
