5,500 is a mediocre sized house. easily obtainable by a decently successful business man. all the houses on the street I grew up on are approx 3,000 sq ft and are by far considered 'big'

Mediocre?  The size of the house dosen't matter that much compared to the quality of the house.  Where I live there are 5500 square foot houses that are 4 million dollars.  Crafted with the best woods, and stones and custom made moldings.  Culter house is beautiful.  He could have easily made it like 12000 square feet for the same price.  But quality is a different thing guys.

Jay Cutler is a very smart man, he has invested money in realestate and lot's of other things and that man makes a ton of coin.  If you think Jay Cutler is just a bodybuilder your wrong.  He is a solid business man and will continue make serious money after he retires.

Also, take into consideration that the garage is also included in that 4800 sq ft, the average 2 car garage is around 600sqft. Still a decent size home.

I think the 4,800 sq ft is only the first floor (which has 12 or 20 foot ceilings).
The garage is about 1,200 sq ft, which is where I believe the 5,500 sq ft number came about. 
I've only seen photos of the home, but it is very beautiful.
