Morning Cardio??
« on: November 29, 2007, 10:57:55 PM »
hey bros what do you guys think about doing cardio first thing in the morning before you eat or anything for like a half hour...thats what i just started doing...and although ive only lost a little bit, i feel great for the rest of the day...but acutally what i was trying to ask was i also lift wieghts as heavy and hard as anyone else and i know about the whole protien and carbs diet plan and am getting pretty good as far as timing them but in the morning when i run my goal is just to burn some body fat...id say im around 15-20% so should i take a protien shake inthe morning before i run or not?  i have been torn with this so i havent but i was wondering what you guys  suggest...i dont want to lose any size just burn some fat

personally I wouldn't take anything before cardio except eca stack.  Protein afterwards. But if you are sitting at 20% or more I don't think it is critical either way just as long as you burn calories and tighten the diet correctly.

The most important thing is that what you're doing appeals to you, thus there's no reason to change anything. It might be different if you felt that it effected your performance, but it doesn't look so.

Secondly, there's a school of thought that says that working out on an empty stomach with cardio's a more a more efficient approach. As opposed to those who believe that the timing of food intake's irrelevant, what's important is total food over a period of time, not when it's eaten.

Controversial, no one knows, but i have a hunch that doing cardio on an empty stomach might make it better, in terms of the order of what's expended first when fat-burning.

In addition, i think there's possibly a psychological boost from cardio on an empty stomach. You feel as though it's literally burning the fat off.

um...

if you have no fuel in the tank the body will burn muscle first...

Sorry to pop pumpers bubble but it's simple science...

prior to cardio is the best time to drink a protein shake

yea but i swear ive read before that if you do cardio on an empty stomache and you have fat on your body to spare then it is going to use fat for fuel before muscle...correct me if im wrong but could that  be compared to going into a state of ketosis?

According to Bob Chick the intensity determines if it's muscle of fat that will be used for fuel.

LOW intensity = fat

higher= muscle

low intensity = walking at a slow to medium tempo.

any kind of running or powerwalk is gonna require alot of fuel, and on empty stomach you will burn muscle.

i'm going to state emphatically that morning cardio burning more fat is a complete and utter fallacy...

I would like to know that myself.

I have done morning cardio in the past but i didn't know it was supposed to be LOW intensity, so i walked very fast and as a result muscles were burned off. For the last year or two i have been doing high intensity/running, middle of the day, 1 hour or 2 after a meal and it works well, no muscle loss.

However cardio is like protein powder, just a helper. It's the diet that matters most.

Unless you have empirical data to back that up, I'll chalk it up to opinion.  Which is fine, but if you are going to make a statement like that then back it up with evidence.

I'm not defending either side of the debate personally, because I think there's more research that needs to be done before coming to a solid conclusion, but saying something is an utter fallacy without evidence of such is just anecdotal at best.

It's definitely not simple science since there are very knowledgable experts who will speak strongly on behalf of both sides, eating before morning cardio and not eating before morning cardio.

Unless you're already super lean, there's really no evidence to support fasted cardio vs not.  Even then, I haven't seen any hard science to support it.

well since thats the case honestly im just going to keep on running first thing in the morning before i eat or anything else, and also im sorry but there is no f'en point to do it "low intensity" ie. walking because imho thats a waste of time so im going to continue running my 2 miles every other day and we will see what happens i guess....hey pumpster ill keep you updated as far as if i lose any size, strength or intensity onmy workouts as a i progress....thanks bros

i haven't seen a bit of evidence yet in this discussion to prove the theory...as I  stated, I believe it's a fallacy...read up on human physiology and you will see that there are groups that are for and groups that are against this ''theory''--the theory has been put out there by bodybuilders, and fitness babes that rely on ''other methods'' to burn fat--and not just morning cardio...to say that one will get more ripped because they do 45 minutes of cardio first thing in the morning than the person who does 45 minutes later in the day is silly---factors such as metabolism, calorie intake play a part in fat loss...bottom line---you don't get ripped faster just doing morning cardio....

Obviously; doesn't necessarily require morning fueling however.

just as an update i have noticed a slip in some strength not size..on like the last reps of the last sets im talking like 1 or 2....i dont believe that the morning cardio which i stopped doing this week made me less strong because on the days i didnt run i didnt have a problem with any reps but i think it mayjust be due to the fact that i was waking up an hour earlier and not going bed an hour earlier....with the way my schedule is i really cant go to bed any earlier...but as far as losing muscle mass i have not...but ive lost 4 pounds of seemingly gross body fat also i didnt try the whole low intensity thing as some were suggesting didnt see the point i was out there to run not walk around the track....

This is what I have always heard.

Doing cardio first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, before you eat anything, is by far, the most effective. Whether you run, jog, walk, swim, jump rope, take an aerobics class, ride a bike, etc., doing it first thing in the morning is the best time to do it for maximum fat loss. Why? Its simple. When you do your cardio workout, you are burning calories. Lets say you wake up, eat breakfast, eat lunch later in the day, and then a few hours after lunch, you do your cardio. All you will be doing during that cardio is burning the calories and carbs of the food you just ate. When you do cardio first thing in the morning, you haven't eaten anything for the last 8 or so hours because you were sleeping. So, when your body sees that there are no carbs to burn, it goes directly to stored bodyfat. And stored bodyfat is the fat that is on your body, which is the fat that you want to lose!

When you do your cardio sometime during the day other then first thing in the morning, you spend most of that time burning off carbs that you already ate that day. When you do it first thing in the morning, there are no carbs to burn, so all your body can burn is body fat!

yea john but the alternative one could offer for that is to do cardio after lifting because that would also be optimal time for stored fat burn being that you worked off the majority of what you have available at the forefront due to lifting

That's the question, whether the timing does in fact effect the sequenced depletion of stored energy between fat and carbs.

Don't know if there's any solid research on the veracity of this theory or not.

It's true, but the amounts of energy you get from burning fat is very little. So if you do an activity that requires a lot of energy the body is forced to burn more than fat to be able to supply the body with adequate energy for said activity.
