New ways of Shoulder training, any opinions?
« on: December 04, 2007, 06:12:32 PM »
I thought about how we train our shoulder and i came up with a new way to weight lift with the shoulder. I wonder if this works.. can anybody give me feedbacks as to how it'll work or damage our shoulders.

1)start with using a 10lbs -15 lbs dumbbell

2) raise the dumbbells up from your sides ( as if doing a deltoid raise)

3) rotate the dumbells in a semi small circular motion ( about 5- 7 inches away from your shoulder and do for 3x10.) Do it without dropping your arms

i think that this would creat a throwing motion of somehow, just not wide and it would focus more on the shoulder and therefore works the deltoids all around with greater intensity.

I've got too much pride to ever reach for a 10 or 15 lb DB.....

that being said it sounds like a "wonderful" exercise that's making monsters out of nursing home patients worldwide !

try these 3 supersets instead with a 30-45 second break between the sets:

side laterals
front laterals

front laterals
rear laterals

rear laterals
side laterals

try to get at least 10 reps on each, and then do partials to overload the shoulders.

or stick to basics:
cling and press 4 x 6-8, go heavy as possible
db / military press 3 x 6-8, go heavy as possible
lat raises 4 x 8-12, aim for rep range and control weight
upright rows 3 x 8-12, medium weight but stick with good form
rear lat raises 3 x 10-12, aim for rep range and squeeze

as soon as you can cling and press  and military 225 for 6-8 youll have big wide shoulders and traps.

first you gotta figure out what size wrench you need, then you have to cress it in a counterclockwise rotation.  Easy. ;)

side laterals
front laterals

front laterals
rear laterals

rear laterals
side laterals

try to get at least 10 reps on each, and then do partials to overload the shoulders.

Two Things:

1) That is way too much work for the front delts. You do not need that much for the anterior head, especially since you get plenty of stimulation from doing chest work (benches, incline work etc...). And...

2) There is no such thing as "front laterals." Lateral means "to the side." So when people say "side laterals," they are really saying "side side," which you also said.

OK, the last (and third) thing;

I love doing supersets for shoulders. Especially at the end of the workout. I have a couple favorites I do, and sometimes if I'm giant setting, I will do all of them combined!

Superset #1:

Std or St.
Laterals
Front Raise
Arnold Press

Superset #2:

'Round The Worlds
These start with a lateral, then you spin the DB around as you bring them in front of your chin (arms still extended) like a front raise and/or DB Flye. Then you bring the DB's up above your head and reverse the motion in full, and that's one rep. Check one of Milos' FitShow episodes with Hide for further investigation.

Superset #3:

Alt. Laterals where you bring up the left arm to shoulder height, hold it and right arm up. Now lower the left arm and and continue to alternate in this fashion.

For a really horrid and torturous workout, do all of them non-stop. You won't be able to use much more than a 5-10lb DB, but it will hurt like FUCK.

:)

i think that this would creat a throwing motion of somehow, just not wide and it would focus more on the shoulder and therefore works the deltoids all around with greater intensity.

There are NO new ways of training shoulders, just do what worked and still works over the years.

This shoulder work-out has really worked for me.

Military Press- 3 sets 225 lbs
DB Press- 3 sets 75-85 lbs
DB Front Raise- 3 sets 35-40 lbs
DB Side Raise- 3 sets 30-40 lbs
DB shrugs- 3 sets 90 lbs

I usually keep my reps around 8 or so on everything but shrugs.  I've found that I get better results my doing 10-15 reps on shrugs with lighter weight.  It's easy to go to heavy on them and waste your time.  I think you get more out of it if you try to "pull your shoulders up to your ears" with a 2-3 second hold at the top.  As far as the raises go, I only go up in weight once I can do them controlled with little arm bend and no cheating by using your body to "rock" the weight up.

I also like to mix in Arnold Presses with lighter weight and Two-handed front raises with olympic plates.

Good Luck.
