Shaq versus Bynum
« on: December 07, 2007, 08:18:08 AM »
Out of nine statistical categories, Bynum beats Shaq in five, with one category tied (blocks).  This appears to validate Dr. Buss's decision not to give Shaq a long term extension which would have fiscally handicapped the team for many years for a declining player.

Shaq:

Minutes: 27:48
FG %: 59.1
FT %: 47.7
Reb.: 7.7
Assists: 1.1
TO: 2.8
Blk: 1.8
PF: 3.8
PPG: 15.0

Bynum

Minutes: 25:53
FG %: 58.1
FT %: 68.5
Reb.:   9.6
Assists: 1.4
TO: 1.3
Blk: 1.8
PF: 3.2
PPG: 10.4

haha, shaq still can't hit 50% from the free throw line...

Bynum's numbers look decent, but no star quality. Shaq is fading

The guy just turned 20 and is averaging very close to a double-double in 25 minutes per game.  I think he has star potential at the very least.

sure but your taking one athlete who is physically able to do more than another at this point in both their careers. compare the two at the same stage of their careers. would you take Shaq in his prime? or take Bynums potential?

or Dwight Howard = man beast

But I think my point was that Dr. Buss recognized that Shaq would not be a good long term investment, and it was better to find a young center with some potential that could do the same as an aging Shaq for less cash

Conceded: Bynum is not Shaq in his prime, but neither is Howard . . .

Shaq did help Wade win a Championship since he left. Being frugal didn't bring Buss a championship. Just a bunch of role players and a superstar malcontent that doesn't want to be there.

True- but the crucial questions are- (1) do you take 1 championship to doom your franchise for five years and (2) would Shaq have shown the same dedication to get in shape and be productive as a Laker.  I cannot answer the first question, but the second question is a resounding "NO".

Yes you do. I'd rather have a championship and then 5 bad years than have 10 years of solid basketball with no ring.

And Shaq has never really been in shape. It was the rift between him and Kobe that prevented them from having more Championships.

I agree.  Good decision by Buss.

The comparison should be Bynum at year 3 with Shaq at year 3.  Shaq wins.  I don't know if Bynum will ever be like Shaq was in his prime (probably not), but he has shown potential this year.

Not really.  The Heat won in spite of, not because of Shaq--with a whole let of help from the refs.  D-Whistle got Michael Jordan treatment.

Shaq was awful in the playoffs and the finals during that championship run.

I do agree the Lakers need some major help.  They better get Kobe some help.   :-\

This is true.  Although I blame Shaq for most of it, they were both stupid.  They could have won another ring if they brought everybody back the next year (Shaq, Kobe, Malone, etc.).  Too bad.

Shaq is done now anyway.

He can still dominate for about a half a quarter or so.  Riley has been pulling him because he is a liability.

True.  He can play hard for about a half at most.  Zo is actually a decent backup.

Bynum played about the best game of his career tonight against Golden State.  Looked very good.  I was impressed.  His line:

20 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 0 steals, 5 blocks, 0 fouls

If he keeps improving he is going to be a force.  He is starting to develop a little mean streak, which he was missing last year.

I think Bynum had 11 rebounds with 3 assists
