Steel homes
« on: December 16, 2007, 09:45:13 AM »
Is this a good idea?  I've seen it advertised for a "fraction" of the cost to build a wood frame and it's about time to start looking at houses.

hmm.. sounds good so far.

Are they more or less resistant to strong winds (tornadoes, hurricanes, etc)??

i already have a smaller one built that survived hurricane rita.if you go on some of these steel building web sites they show you pictures of building that have survived 140+mph winds from hurricane katrina.

my only regret is not doing it sooner, here in texas its becoming very popular.

Excellent, thanks!

Although they don't seem to be too popular as single homes, any ideas?

Looking at that site it doesn't look like steel buildings as single family homes are offered or at least common.

Do you know of any reason there aren't more steel homes?

ok i get you now, these buildings are not sold as homes,so whenever you build one tell the bank you are building a barn, garage, shop something like that.trust me you still get full home owners insurance.

Hey bro keep us updated, you think you could post some pictures of it?

I drive thru I-20 alot and I see in Canton, alot of the steel businesses are doing really great in Texas. You go to vast parts of the country that are seeing some growth and all the retail buildings are steel frames

Years ago, they were creating a real BUZZ, but then they kind of faded from the spotlight.
I heard they are incredible in a fire tho, and are much less expensive, and better for the environment.

Excuse my ignorance but why don't Americans seem to like brick or concrete houses.
I have seen picts after a tornado or hurricane and it all seems like wood.
Here we only use brick or concrete house.............. they are more bullet proof  :D

I think it's cost.

I personally love brick... Classic elegance.

It's just not common in the US as it adds a much higher cost of a new home.

they faded from the spotlight, yea but the sector is still so strong, steel mills closed during the 70's and 80's are now being re-opened.

i have never lived in anything but a brick house, for the exception of my old wooden beach house.

another advantage to the steel house is the construction time.
