Police officer tases female yoga instructor in Best Buy
« on: December 26, 2007, 10:11:14 AM »
Video has surfaced of a Daytona Beach police officer using a TASER on a woman in a store.

According to our partners at the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Elizabeth Beeland was shopping at a Best Buy in Daytona Beach last month.

Before she checked out, she got an upsetting phone call about her child and stepped outside to take the call.

According to the police report, the clerk said Beeland was suspicious and flagged down Daytona Beach police officer Claudia Wright, who was in the store.

When Officer Wright confronted Beeland, she yelled at her.

When they came back in the store, Wright repeatedly asked her to calm down and threatened to arrest and TASER her if she didn't.

As the video shows, Beeland continued to back away as the officer moved closer.

Beeland was then TASED and arrested.

Beeland is charged with disorderly conduct and resisting a police officer without violence.

Police department policy states an officer can deploy his or her TASER "for the purpose of subduing a violent, noncompliant or combative subject."

Beeland's attorney is now investigating what legal action to take against the police department and officer.

Cops been carrying guns for decades and never using them....Now that they have Tazers that supposedly dont kill, they are itchy to use them at any time....

Usually it doesnt matter what they suspect is doing, even in a video....All that needs to be heard is the cop going, CALM DOWN SIR!!!!!!!!! SIR, GET ON THE GROUND, GET ON THE GROUND NOW!!!!!!!!!!! they say this superbly loud causing confusion in the suspect....then, WHAMO!!!!!!!!! zzzzzzzzahaaaahahahahah oooooooohh aaaaaaaaaaahhhh ggggggggggcccckkkkkkkkuu uccckkkkk k ugh guh, convulsing and screaming all at once.....

Bragging rights on doing this on a female? oh man, thats gold....Our tax dollars at work on keeping the public safe.....

I am all for bashing the Cops with tasers issue on here as much as anyone...but it
Sounds to me like the cop was probably not completely in the wrong on this.It says she was warned repeatedly. Granted the lady was emotional and upset by the phone call....but when confronted by the cop should have explained why she stepped outside, rather than yell and back away.

Jag if I read correctly the officer just happened to be in the store at the time...they weren't summoned

I don't know if she deserves to be charged...in my mind it would depend on the situation( what was the emergency call and would it be understandable that she would have been worked up) but if she didn't explain that to the officer they had no way of knowing..all they knew is she wasn't cooperating.

I didn't see the video my comments come only from reading the limited info in the original post.

In the story I read, the cop was called. (yes she was in the store, but she didn't approach the woman on her own, she was called over) What I want to know if, she looked suspicious of what?  How do you report someone as looking suspicious? suspicious of what?

I agree, my comments come only from reading what limited info is there, ...but it stands to reason, ...I mean common sense will tell you that if you are walking towards someone carrying a weapon, that they are going to back away from you. Anytime you approach someone aggressively, they are automatically going to back away from you.

And from what I gathered, the police officer approached her AFTER she had already checked out.

so again, my question is, 'suspicious of what?' if it was a floor walker raising the 'suspicious' tag, that's one thing.
But a check-out clerk who was more than likely behind the counter the entire time of this woman's visit to the store?

Does that mean everytime someone steps outside their door they must have a happy pleasantville-like smile plastered to their face so they don't look "suspicious".

I pity those who walk around in a perpetual state of paranoia.

Can you please explain to me what this woman looked "suspicious" of? can anybody?

I agree with your comment on what defines "looking suspicious" .

citizens should never have to be afraid of a law enforcement officer. It used to be that as long as you were not breaking the law, you didn't need to be,but anymore it seems the only way to gaurentee you won't land in hot water is to just avoid them completely...and that is sad because that isn't how it should be. I understand they have a very dangerous job and they nevr know who they are dealing with, I have no problem with a law enforcement officer doing whatever they need to do if they feel threatened...but anymore it seems  some of em  do it just because they can. Not saying all of em, just some.

She didnt respect the police, that makes her suspicious. Like it or not, if you have nothing to worry about it, you simple follow the police's order. That's the way i do it and i have never had a single problem with police. Also, i dont walk around looking suspicious or nervous.

Ok...but Jags argument is why were they called? The article says the cops were brought over because she looked suspicious,so your argument doesn't really fit in this instance. But I agree once the officer was involved she should have respected them and cooperated, she was only there because the clerk called for her..she was doing her job as far as that goes, I guess.

Do not walk around looking suspicious or nervous? Whats wrong with that? are they the KGB or Gestapo ?
Did it say she broke a law? So she was tazed for looking suspicious and nervous? Or for backing away and being emotional? Ah, showing emotion is grounds to be tazed.....What if he had a bullwhip, could he have used that? What about a baton? I think so, she didnt follow his orders......

Have you seen people tazed? Looks very painful and cruel....People put to death on death row get better treatment; no pain with lethal injection....

I guess another citizen felt insecure? I would call the cops if i see someone looking suspicious too. It's not police's fault, they get paid to attend all calls, and what happened after that, its all fault of the so called "yoga instructor".

As i said, nice yoga instructor!

Im not sure what they based it on just relaying the info and she never made a purchase if you read your post carefully it says before she checked out
