if you shake a martini in ice instead of stir it, you get a watered down martini

A shaken martini is called a Bradford.  It's my understanding that vodka is one of the few spirits which should be refrigerated or kept in the freezer at the temp of Russian snow.  ;)  Vermouth should always be refrigerated.  The practice of shaking is a holdover from the early-mid 1900s when most vodka was make from potatoes, which was when Flemming was writing.  Ask for a Bradford today only if you are being served $2 vodka or want to look like a tool.

For 100 years advertising and Hollywood have been trying to make boozing stylish. And damn, it is!

How often have you seen couples yelling at one-another in the street, teenagers slumped over fences/car hoods, or street winos with pissy pants, and thought: Christ, where do I sign up for that lifestyle!?

others have described it as Weider bribing his way into the contest and 5th place.   He didn't even compete in posing trunks, but in his street trousers.

maybe training legs isn't one of the weider principles?

that's certainly an interesting take on it.  others have described it as Weider bribing his way into the contest and 5th place.   He didn't even compete in posing trunks, but in his street trousers.

I got it from Weider's book..."Brother's Of Iron"....

Robby Robinson modeled for the statue.  The folded arms drawing is from 1947, long before he met Robby Robinson.   (RR was born in 1946)  but it is a drawing and doesn't really match any of the photos of the time.

Robby told me that he did model for the statue.

Some months later, he was invited to a black-tie event at the Woodland Hills office for th unveiling of the artistic piece.

It was covered in a sheet...and, after everyone enjoyed some drinks and speeches, the sheet was pulled off, ......with Joe's head on the statue supported by Robbie's body....Robby was shocked, but didn't say anything.

He thought it was gonna be in tribute to him, in his complete likeness.

Notice how Jodi Foster seems to suddenly have adopted Connery's style of speech slurring?

That's one of my pet hates about Connery, that utterly-affected speech anomaly.

Foshter ain't the only one.

Here in Scotland, there's an ex-soccer pro named Ally McCoist who's adopted the same shit. What some cretins will do in an attempt to make themselves interesting!

We also have a peer of the realm over here named Tony Benn, who has a slurry speech pattern too. Maybe he was born with it, or maybe Winston Churchill was his hero  ::)

Nevaaa in the field of human endeavooooour... has a statesman been such a girl!

I remember a bit of it from Silence but I'll have a look at the more recent stuff to compare.

If it's like you say, I'll have a word with her.

As for the Weider/Robinson statue thing, that sounds to me like maybe it was influenced by Schwarzenegger.

We all know that Robby and Arnold were never best friends. It's also clear that Weider was always keen to please Arnold. LOL, maybe he was always keen for Arnold to please him!

Notice that Robby Robinson is credited in Pumping Iron as Robin Robinson? A petty dig on Arnold's part? I think it likely.

So it's entirely possible that the statue snub was an orchestrated elbow in the ribs.

Like I said, people are assholes.

Maybe the slurring in The Silence of the Lambs was part of her attempt to sound like Starling was from West Virginia.

She really gets into it when she has to shoo those deputies from the autopsy!

I guess she liked how it sounded.

Y'all!

Did Robby try and sue Joe for the likness of his body,I heard this a while back, could be a silly rumour.

Lol, ya she was really chewing the scenery.  Great movie but she was just along for the ride.

IMO the director of photography really made the film.  Tak Fujimoto.  He was everywhere in the late 80s and 90s.

Move outa Scotland? Sounds terrific, but I heard they have people elsewhere too!

You're right though, I am a bitter ol' lemon. Wish I wasn't, but we is what we is.

Um... I thought Foster was okay in Silence. Who else coulda been Starling at the time? Holly Hunter maybe?

I think Scott Glenn was underused. He's not the most dynamic kinda guy, but he was way more interesting in Wild Geese II and later in Training Day.

Ted Levine made Silence for me. Put the fucking lotion in the basket!!!

Yeah Monk, that's almost certainly a daft rumour.

I don't think Robinson is dumb enough to think he could win such a suit. First of all, how does he prove that the statue was modelled on him, or that he didn't give his consent?

In any case, Weider is no stranger to lawsuits, and his fiscal resources are limitless. I doubt Robinson can say that.

Holly Hunter maybe?

Holy shit.  It's like you're my evil twin.

How many times you think Keitel said sorry for getting wood while filming The Piano?

Ya, Scott Glenn had the right stuff.

1) no it is not.  2) yes he is.   3) he has the model release form.  but then that's why the suit was thrown out.

That is, Robinson was the model for the statue.  He was paid for the job and signed a release form.  20 some years later, he sued Weider for more money and acknowledgment that it was his body on the statue.  Well, he did get the later.

If you have any issues of old Muscle Builder's (Progenitor of M&F)...you will notice that Robby is credited in the contributor's section at the beginning of each mag as 'Robin Robinson'...so, that may well be his real name.

Oh. Just saw TF's post.

BTW, Holly Hunter seems to slur ala J. Foster.
