Ab training and Breathing

I've tended not to place a great deal of emphasis on direct ab work in the last few years but I've recently started back training them on a twice-weekly basis.

I only do forward and reverse crunches at the moment but I was a bit concerned about my breathing while doing them - I tend to find myself holding my breath while cranking out the reps and I wondered if this is right? Whenever I take a breath during the set my abs tend to relax too much and I loose that "squeeze" on the muscles.

Anyone got any pointers asto how I should be doing them right?

Exhale on the contraction.........keep the range of motion short.

yea wes is correct inhale up and exhale down...also try some hanging leg raises which are real effective for lower abs....

Exhale on the contraction.........keep the range of motion short.

HAHA - I did think that as I was trying to work it out in my head! No worries man - I knew what you meant!
