I disagree.  It's more about trying to further an agenda than about entitlements.  If it were just about entitlements, people would be satisfied with reciprocal beneficiaries and domestic partnership laws.  They essentially provide all of the benefits of marriage.  It's really about forcing the state to legitimize what some people do in the bedroom.
