That would slow the Suns down a lot. I don't get this trade.

Terrible trade for the Suns.  I doubt Shaq can run with that offense well enough to be a major factor.  He doesn't play defense or rebound, so all they're getting is a big injury prone lug who can dunk every now and again.

Asked how he thought O'Neal would be most effective for Phoenix, the Lakers coach [Phil Jackson] said, "Taking the ball out of bounds and waiting for the other team to get back."

hahha. Shaq is one of the greatest ever, but how is he going to repace Marion's rebounding and defense?

He can't.  He also can't replace his scoring or his minutes.  Marion can play and defend four positions.

Yeah but he can "try" defend duncan and gasol, hopefully it motivates him, thats all he needs

He can try.  I'll be holding my breath.  Looking forward to getting my "Snack O'Neal" thread updated.   :D

Deep down im a shaq fan so im Bias, but when his motivated he does play well, he just gets bored/lazy real quick.

Remember when Chris webber teamed up with Iverson and everyone thought that would pan out and it flopped real quick.

shaq really wants another ring so i think he will do what it takes, i know his body has taken a beating over 15 years, his toe, his knee, quads, left shoulder & hip but he has a great cast around him, Nah, amare, Hill there great

It's a desparate move for the Suns who have come to the conclusion that being a run and gun team isn't going to win them a championship. Now you're going to see the Suns score less(they'll probably average up to 5-7 points a game less for the rest of the season) and run more half court offense. The Suns are barely over .500 whith Amare playing power foward. Look it up.

I doubt Shaq has much left to offer. He can't stay healthy and he can't stay in shape. He just doesn't get it that he needs to lose like 50 pounds in order to still be effective at age 36. He often has more fouls than rebounds these days and he's slow as a slug.

The Miami Heat just made a solid move in getting rid of a huge contract while acquiring a 29 year old multi talented player in Marion. The guy can flat out do it all and I think he's one of the most valuable players in the NBA. Marion just fills up a stat sheet every night. If the Heat can re sign him to a new contract, Miami can contend again in a year or two with a couple of decent free agents signings.

Good trade for the Heat, not so good for the Suns.

Miami can't win a Burger Ring let alone Championship ring, marion is talented but he aint the piece for a championship, Miami is rebuilding now, Williams, Ricky davis will have to fuck off next year, they need a big guy (Zo is gone) and a few Shooters to spread the floor so wade can go one on one.

Riley got rid of Posey, Walker, kapono, Damon Jones, Eddie Jones they were great shooters that kept the defense collapsing on Shaq and wade

P.S watch wades turnover average go through the roof, and watch him get injured and not play the whole season.

Shawn marion's defense is over-rated. He rebounds well but gets lit up by T-mac, Dirk, Bron, Melo...he gets game winners hit in his face all the damn time.

when its crunch time he ain't stopping anybody like some of these people believe.   He's a good defender effort wise...but he ain't shutting anyone down...not Josh Howard, not Lamar Odom...2nd tier players...that destroyed him last year as well.

Shaq may not block lot of shots but he changes shots and scares off players like Tony parker that love driving in the lane

Marion was killing the chemistry of the team. Dude was always whining. He had to go but I thought AK-47 would have fit better in Phoenix. Or why didn't they trade for Pau Gasol?

If you take notice of what I said, my opinion was that it would take a season or two with some added free agents that Miami can now afford to acquire with Shaq's contract gone. The Boston Celtics proved this past offseason that you can turn a team around in a year. I realize that they're aern't many Garnetts and Ray Allens available these days but if they can acquire a younger big man like you suggested and grab a good outside scorer, this team can contend with 2 years.

I know you're a Shaq nut hugger, but the sad reality is that he's a bum now, plain and simple. He has never been a good rebounder or defender his entire career and he completely lacks the dedication to stay in shape and do what's neccesary to avoid missing games because of injuries. He's lazy and he's been that way his entire career. A fat ass who relied on playing his way into shape every season. But guess what, as he got older, it became harder to do and as a result, more nagging injuries began to occur in recent years.

And yes, I'm a Marion nut hugger because he's an outstanding player. Why can't he be a piece of a championship? If he re-signs with the Heat to an extension, then I don't see how that's a bad thing for Miami to have a player of his caliber to complement Wade.

Yeah im a shaq guy since he was drafted from Orlando, i know shaq's lazy, and unmotivated and really only plays for the playoffs, i do also feel wade will struggle now, his banged up also, his playing injured, i dont know why his not resting, the seasons done, they have a shot at number one pick,
Marions great, i ove his game, he fills out a stat sheet splendidly but his D is overrated, lamar odom killed him last year, he always gets game winners hit in his face,  anyway we can go back and forth on this , i do agree with you bout shaq though, his lazy but hpefully he can prove em wrong.

seriously though, Quickerblade...I think playing on a run and gun team like Phoenix wouldn't provide much of a opportunity to showcase your defensive abilites. Phoenix doesn't play defense.

Marion reminds me a lot of Scottie Pippen back in the day, another favorite player of mine. If one facet of Pippen's game was lacking, such as scoring, he could beat you with his defense. I love watching all-round players like him or Jason kidd, for example.

As far as Wade goes, he's playing for pride. He's a competitor and simply put, he's paid to play. He probably feels like he's letting the Heat organization down if he chose to shut the season down. Futhermore, nobody would come to their home games if Wade didn't play so I'm sure that's another reason.

I like Popovich, but he needs to quit whining.

Gasol trade sparks war of words
Popovich pops off on Grizzlies' controversial swap
Posted: Friday February 8, 2008 9:20PM; Updated: Friday February 8, 2008 9:27PM

By Chris Mannix, SI.com

NEW YORK -- Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace went on the offensive against his critics on Thursday, calling the unattributed criticism of the Pau Gasol trade from other general managers "pillow talk" and daring any league executives to go on the record against the deal.

Before Friday night's game against the Knicks, Spurs president and head coach Gregg Popovich did just that.

"What they did in Memphis is beyond comprehension," said Popovich. "There should be a trade committee that can scratch all trades that make no sense. I just wish I had been on a trade committe that oversees NBA trades. I'd like to elect myself to that committee. I would have voted no to the L.A. trade."

When told that Wallace had challenged executives to criticize the deal publicly, Popovich replied, "Well, there you go. I'm on the record."
