I agree with but but I have this mental block that if I dont get 405 up for a few reps on the flat bench Im going to loose something so I start flat bench then move to the incline then the decline.

thats funn...i do use the 35 's for warming up...        i just trained chest this morning. so nxt chest workout ill try to do some HEAVY flys and see if i can gte soemthing out of them.

Flat flyes are a great exercise. Arnold used to do them starting at 60lb dumbbells and going up to 80lb dumbbells to pre-exhaust his chest. Then he'd do inclines with a barbell, weighted dips, crossovers, pullovers.

Pearls of wisdom from Charles....take our advices my friends, and use the bench press as merely ONE exercise of many....especially if you're not built for the bench.

any time people ask me what i suggest for chest work, i say to get on the incline and use some dumbbells. i love benching heavy but hasn't done fuck all for my chest.

If you bench PL style (elbows in, arched etc.) it's not going to do much for your chest, it becomes another story when you bench bb style.

i dont believe in heavy flyes.

Fly motions including DB and pec deck are the purest chest exercises, meaning maximum upper arm ROM and minimum arm flex. Schwarzenegger and others going heavy on flys should be a pretty good hint.

Those machine presses Glass had them doing were very effective because they exaggerate the fly motion in each case, and minimize pressing and arm flex.

Can't do incline...fucks my shoulders up too much....

The old debat....does it actually make a difference whether you flat bench or incline bench?...the pecs are one muscle....

Definitely matters. However the old debate is true. It's called the "all or none" principle. All of the muscle fibers fire or none at all. However, you can put more emphasis on a specific area on certain groups.

Interesting...the one at Golds can be adjusted for height.

I train at Venice Gold's as well and I've never had the patience to actually figure out how that machine really works

Anybody ever get problems in their upper back around the spine area from barbell chest press movements or machines? I've been getting that recently. I may switch over to dumbbells completely for a while and see if that helps any.

Come to think of it, my damn body is breaking down. I played basketball for the first time in 5 months today and I feel terrible. My right foot (which I sprained six months ago badly) feels awful and my left knee always stiffens up. I tweaked my lower back earlier in the week and then there's this upper back problem. People told me that you really begin to feel your age in your 30s, now I believe them!

Just getting older is all it is, bro. The day after my first baseball game last year, every single bone in my feet were sore. WTF is up with that!?. Just gotta suck it up and remind yourself that you are %100 fitter than the rest of the unwashed that surround us.  :-\
