The nutball chiropractor I work alongside gave me a simple 6 or 7 question test the other day to see where I stood politically and he told me I was a conservative liberal or something to that effect.  I think the questions were, 1) for or against abortion, 2) for or against gay marriage, 3) for or against a strong military, 4) should you give businesses grants to help them employ more people or give more welfare to individuals and I think 5) more or less government control in the lives of it's people.  Something didn't sit right with me having to either be tied with Republican or Democrat; can't one of these candidates become the political everyman or something and just do whatever right in whatever case?  I don't like how you have to be one or the other.  Does Obama come closer to being this than the other candidates?  I mean when I see Hillary I see straight up Democrat and McCain straight up Republican but in Obama I see a bit of a star quality and has anyone else noticed that he's fashioning himself a bit of a comedian lately?

I know there are liberals here, but there are also independents.  They see mccain saying the economy is fine and the Bush economic plan is working great - and they're baffled by it.  Warren Buffet himself said we're entering a recession, yet Bush and Mccain deny anything at all is wrong.

Odds and polls are in favor of Obama at this point, but anything can change in politics.
You won't find too many substantive reasons why folks will vote for McCain but not Obama.
Why is everyone on the right so into abortion,  gay sex and religion, etc.
Do they not realize that the things that actually have an effect on our daily lives are not the things they vote on.
For example, if you are not gay, why even worry about what a gay couple does?
Same with abortion, why do they care what a woman does with her unborn fetus or embryo.
This country has a separation of church and state, which I am all for. I don't belong to any organized religion, but would NEVER protest in front of any church, to prevent those who choose to worship .
Why do they want to force their religious values down my throat and protest my right to NOT follow their personal religion and beliefs??? The typical right wing christian fundamentalist is not that different from an extreme , millitant muslim.They all think they have the direct highway to GOD and everyone else is going to hell, hmmmmmm.
For me, the key issues are:
1. Economic   2. National security*    3. Personal civil rights and liberty 4. Infrastructure ( roads, hwys, ,etc)
* I am a former US Marine, but I don't think we need to invade countries just to help control the middle east oil field.

Good post. I am rather idenpendent msyelf. I gave $$ to Ron Paul, but could see from the jump, he didn't have the speaking ability and charisma of Obama or the name recognition of Hillary and McCain, so he died out.
Obama's pastor made some remarks that were pretty extreme and the good sen from Illinois has been in damage control for the past few days.
I sincerely think that Obama has the talent to restore the positive image America once enjoyed in the world.
I have a huge amount of respct for McCain, voted for him in the primary back in 2000. But, his lack of a change from Bush in economic and Iraq war policy make it impossible for me to vote for him.
Hillary is a brilliant woman and would not be a bad president. At this point however, she is too much into the pockets of the lobbyist . Any of the  3 would be 100x better than Bushy.

Your right on Hillary...McCain is not straight up Republican, thats why he is having trouble uniting the party behind him.  Obama has star quality, I agree, but he does not trandscend party politics, he is probably farther left than Hillary when you look at his specific plans and though he presents himself the best, he may be the best politician of them all (not necessarily good).  Look deeper people.
