No, Wes! His first name is not "Steve".

Reps, I'm sure that there must be a website naming all the obscure movies that had well known bodybuilders in them, but in order to save some time and do as little searching as possible, I'll name a few off the top of my head with the help of IMDB.

Not too many fans know that Steve Reeve's appeared in his first Hollywood production - Jail Bait.

Here's some info on that obscure flick .....  JAIL BAIT is a grimy drama about criminals sleazing around a crummy little town, by the acknowledged king of bad cinema, Ed Wood. In what was conceived as his homage to the TV series DRAGNET and the film noir of the 1930s and 1940s, Wood developed this vehicle for stars Steve Reeves and Delores Fuller, his wife. The story is about a young criminal who kills a cop and has plastic surgery to alter his face. The film's title, however, is misleading; the only mention of "jail bait" in the film is made in reference to a gun!

Steve played the part of a "side-kick" detective in that one. See poster below. It's still available on DVD but it's one of the worst movies of all time.

Athena (MGM 1954) is only available on tape, but Steve was in top shape for that movie - even more-so than any of his Herc pics.

Another obscure but enjoyable movie is "L'il Abner" with Peter Palmer playing the part of Abner and Leslie Parrish as Daisy Mae.

That movie also included a number of bodybuilders (only three got credit on IMDB), the most famous of whom include:

Gordon Mitchell - Gordon Mitchell was one of those perfectly developed bodybuilders who jumped on the Steve Reeves bandwagon and hightailed it to Italy to seek movie stardom as a Herculean strongman. Born in Denver, Colorado, but raised in Inglewood, California, Mitchell served in WWII and at one point became a prisoner of war. After the war he went to college and became a high school teacher, albeit an imposing one, what with his incredible physique. He eventually became part of the "Muscle Beach" crowd and flexed his way into the entertainment field as part of Mae West's musclebound revues, where he toured everywhere from Las Vegas to the Latin Quarter with other "abs"normal actor wannabes such as Mickey Hargitay, Brad Harris and Reg Lewis. Mitchell took a fancy to show biz and appeared as posing beefcake in such films as The Ten Commandments (1956) and Li'l Abner (1959), which, of course, did little to advance his acting career. In 1961, after Reeves' Fatiche di Ercole, Le (1958) (US title: "Hercules") proved a phenomenal hit and revived the "muscleman" genre, the non-Italian-speaking Mitchell headed off to Europe and began appearing in the same type of badly dubbed sandal-and-spear epics. Adept at displaying both heroics and villainy, he developed his own core of fans, but when the fad wore off around 1965, Mitchell--unlike many of his colleagues in that field who just dropped out of sight--stayed on and appeared in over 100 more films, many of them in the "spaghetti western" genre, staying true to the country that made him a star. He passed away in 2003.

Brad Harris - Born in St. Anthony, a small town in eastern Idaho, Bradford Harris attended UCLA in the early 1950s where he played fullback on the football team while studying economics. His studies may have been intended as the groundwork for a career in his family's banking interests but Harris instead drifted into the fringes of Los Angeles' movie business where he began to do stunt work. In the late 1950s he traveled to Europe as the stunt co-ordinator for a German-Italian co-production. Soon he found himself working as a second-unit director and that led to a starring role in 1960's "Goliath Against the Giants." Harris's good looks and muscular build kept him in demand during the era of "sword and sandal" movies and when this fad began to fade, he moved into "spaghetti westerns" and various kinds of action movies with an emphasis on spy thrillers. In 1967, he married actress Olinka Berova.

The most obscure bodybuilding flick of all time has got to be "Beauty and the Beach". It played as a second feature to Elvis' "Kissin Cousins" back in 1964 in Hollywood. More info on that one to follow if there is any interest. It was a fairly good flick about a young girl arriving in Hollywood to become a star and meeting and hooking up with a bodybuilder.

I knew Dave while he was making "Don't Make Waves". He did a good job in that movie. I forget the actual story he told me but that house that slid down the hillside actually slid down that hillside either before the making of that film or shortly thereafter. Reg Lewis and Chet Yorton were also in that one. I believe that Dave met Sharon Tate during the filming of that production and I do know that he was devastated upon her death.

Here's that poster I promised

Correct, Chem! - A young Larry Scott. Here's one of his better bicep shots.

Muscle Beach Party and a few others too. That one was kind of an embarrassment to the BB world though. Rickles was mis-cast as a bodybuilding coach. I guess that was supposed to add to the humor of it all.

Not very good, but it does have Dick Dale, Stevie Wonder and Peter Lorre in it. There's one beach movie that even has Buster Keaton in it. Can't remember the title of that one. Maybe 'How to Stuff a Wild Bikini.'

Chemist, correct with Richard Baldwin.

Chimps, yea, that was Buster Keaton in "How to Stuff a WIld Bikini" playing the part of "Bwana". That was made in 1965 and he made five more films after that before passing away from lung cancer in 1966 at the age of 71. Worked on over 146 films since 1917.

One hell of a long career in the movie business.

Since we're talking about "old timers" and BB's, name these three?  .....

Moose, to be honest with ya, I don't know what Gypsy's stuff was made of but I can tell you now that it was in the form of small wafers wrapped somewhat similar to "Life Savers" and tasted like crap.

As far as I know, those little wafers were the first "protein" supplements offered on the market outside of the very limited number of Weider products. I do recall ordering some of Weider's gain weight product in liquid form back then and it tasted almost identical to Geritol.

It appears that the snake oil salesmen of the wild wild west have crossed the praries and still remain with us today.

You're right, Muscle Beach Party is not very good.  Sadly, of all those "Beach Party" movies, Muscle Beach Party is one of the worst.  Some of them, especially the original, are surprisingly entertaining.

What was the name of that first surfing movie made by one of the Hollywood studios back in the late 50's? That movie packed them in for a couple of months every night when it played in San Francisco.... I think it was called "Giget" something. Terrible movie but it was all about surfing and filled the house every night. Surfing in California was relatively new back then and the only spot to catch a wave in the San Francisco area was off Seal Rock under the Cliff House.

Following shot - Good friend way back when..... Name him.

I've actually never seen Jail Bait, but surely would like to.  I have to confess I've never been able to sit all the way through Ed Wood's Plan 9 From Outer Space, I think it's so terrible.  I have sat all the way through Glen or Glenda, a very stange movie. Really strange.

I saw L'il Abner once, don't remember it very well.

About the sword and sandle guys, from the late 50's until the mid-60's, there were around 150 Hercules movies made.  Most were made in Europe, and only a handful ever got to the U.S.

What most people don't know about Steve Reeves is that when Sergio Leone started to make A Fistful of Dollars in the mid-60's, he wanted the biggest movie star he could get to play the lead.  And the biggest star in Italy at the time was Reeves.  So, Leone offered him the part.  Reeves thought it was a ridiculous idea that an Italian would make an American western, so he turned the part down.  Leone then offered the part to a little-known TV western actor, Clint Eastwood.  And as they say, the rest is history.

Interesting comment about Draper - I completely agree, he was good in Don't Make Waves.  Made me wonder why he didn't make more movies.

WHAT THE F@#% IS Beauty and the Beach????????????????   I've never heard of this movie, couldn't find it on IMDB, or on a simple Google search.  PLEASE, tell me more!

And on the subject of obscurity, in the late 80's there was some kind of bodybuilding movie made.  I don't recall the title, and I don't think it was ever theatrically released.  Do you, or anyone, know anything about it?

Bob's right! That is joe Gold.

"Jail Bait" is available on DVD but it is even worse than "Plan 9".

Would Reeves have done as well as Clint Eastwood if he had taken his part in "A Fistfull of Dollars"?

L'il Abner was a good musical in its day and is available on DVD. Here's a photo of Abner and Daisy that they used to promote that picture. It also included Stubby Kaye and an uncredited Jerry Lewis. Peter Palmer who played the role of Abner fit that part damn well unlike the Superhero actors that are used today.

The L'il Abner bodybuilder scene contained a song called "Put Em Back the Way They Was" after they drank some Mammy Yokum "steroid potion" which worked immediately. The adverse side-effect was that they no longer had any interest in their girlfriends so the ladies all joined together in an effort to "Put Em Back the Way They Was".

A few of the guys who played the bodybuilding parts didn't get screen credit, but you old timers might recognize them if you lived in the L.A. area back then.

As for Dave, I don't know why he didn't stay in the movie business but he did carry on as a Gladiator introducing Herc type movies on a weekly TV show. If he sees this, he might tell us why.
