I know that's Ralph (also known in early Weider shots as Red) Kroger...don't know the other niceties you asked about him.

Clinton B had the crazy vascularity...CF wqas a nut but I don't know what he said at the show. It did put him in a fix, though.

Chick, I was being a wise-ass on that Steve Reeves' suit question, but you're probably right with the Brook's Brothers answer. They were big back then.

Did you have padded shoulders in your first suit or was that out of style by then?

This one is for you to guess unless someone submits the correct answer before you return. Had to cut off the head to make it a bit more difficult. Probably still too easy though.

Don't answer this one, MOOSE!

Yea, Moose! Once again you are correct. That is Ralph. In the early 60's he had a shaky, old, ramshackeled  gym along the Pacific Coast Highway only steps away from the beach just a bit south of Oceanside, California.

Then he eventually packed it up and moved to Hilo, Hawaii and set up a gym there, competing once in a local NPC/IFBB event.

Then he moved back to the mainland and to the best of my knowledge, he became a Preacher.

This all happened within a period of 40 years or so.

Moose, how old are you to know all this ancient stuff?

Here's a tough question for ya. I ask because I forgot the name of this guy myself. Back around 1962/63 there was an exceptional bodybuilder for that time-period living and training in the San Diego area. Somehow he managed to cut a big slice in his leg while operating a chainsaw but eventually recovered. Do you recall this part of BB history and who he was?

ANother topic -  (See photo below) Here's someone you might have met once or twice back then. I doubt that even Chick would remember him.

Interestingly, Kroger competed in and against Dennis Tinnerino in the first Natural Mr. America, sponsored by Chet Yorton, held in Vegas (I think Vegas). Dennis won. That may have been Kroger's last show...I know he came 2nd to Oliva in the 1975 WQBBG Olympus.

The chainsaw man was Chuck Sipes.

haha...I am 44 years old...my friend Mike Katz calls me a bb historian...but, naturally, I am not. Just a pretty clear memory, and I read alot.

I defer to YOU...you are a treasure of experiences and memories.

Here's a good one for you...I came in 9th to Bob Chic's 4th in his first show...the 1981 Natural Teen America, held in lovely Utica, NY. I was astounded at how good Chic looked at 15 yrs old (I was 17). Stood right next to him (Doubt he'd recall skinny me).

Speaking of Oceanside, California...... Does anyone remember Bob Janus who had a gym/handball type gym on the east side of Highway 5?

OK, here's the last shot for the evening.....

See photo below.... A great friend but the last time I heard from him, he had just been rescued from a three day hiatus in some unfamiliar forest.

Phil Hernon was a great fan of his and was probably the major reason for getting involved in this crazy sport we call bodybuilding.

Name him ......

Gary Leonard...won the America year following Ray Mentzer (Actually....Leonard probably deserved to win the year he came in behind Ray...and Bronston Austin, Jr. should have won the year Leonard won....oh, well).

how about Gypsy's protein...was it a combo of bananas and carrots?......

Moose, to be honest with ya, I don't know what Gypsy's stuff was made of but I can tell you now that it was in the form of small wafers wrapped somewhat similar to "Life Savers" and tasted like crap.

As far as I know, those little wafers were the first "protein" supplements offered on the market outside of the very limited number of Weider products. I do recall ordering some of Weider's gain weight product in liquid form back then and it tasted almost identical to Geritol.

It appears that the snake oil salesmen of the wild wild west have crossed the praries and still remain with us today.

I remember reading in Dick Tyler and Draper's book West Coast BB Scene, about a show in the 70's run by Zane, Arnold and Franco (and won by Ed Giuliani) at a high school...and Gypsy Boots did a performance...Tyler had a hard time describing what Boots did...it was kind of insane...but it involved carrots and bananas....

Chick, as usual - you are right once again. It is Ernie without his head on top. If Brooks is still open, I'm gonna look for that suit and wear it to funerals, weddings and christenings

Moose, I knew Gypsy for a brief period of time in the early 60's. They held a contest on some baseball field in Palm Springs and Gypsy did some amazing feats with a football. And even back then he was a relatively old guy. I can't offer an accurate guess on how far he threw that ball but no one else there was willing to challenge him with a longer toss.

I got no idea what he did with those banannas and carrots though. I must have missed that one.

That was the year that Don Peterson won and Peter Lupus (Mission Impossible) took second. And that was the same day the sandstorm took the paint off my relatively newly painted VW while driving out of town back to the base.

Moose, I "kind of recall" a similar chainsaw accident happening to Sipes but I believe that that event happened years later and much later than  the early 60's.

Regardless, it is not Chuck Sipes that I am thinking of in reference to the San Diego incident. Care to offer a second opinion?

Interesting to hear that you competed against Bob back then. I think I first me Bob when he was competing against Ernie Santiago at some West Coast event or it could have possibly been during some photo session after one of those contests.

Since, I'm back on, I'll post another photo of a good friend during the latter part of his life. He made funny things happen during those relatively young years in the BB era.

Moose, I worked on Gary's prep that year he won. And a mutual friend by the name of Steve Dussia worked on his posing which Gary claimed enabled him to win the overall Mr America title (that was the last year it was awarded). The next year we all got together for the Nationals at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas (Tim Belnap won it with the help of Jeff and Cori while I served as the Gopher Driver looking for the right foods to eat). One of the Supp Companies threw a party after the contest (the finals was held in the early afternoon so that Engelbert Humperdink or some comparable critter could go on stage for the main event). That was unquestionably the best party I've even attended (someone must have spiked my cocktail or blown MJ in my direction) with just about everyone of any importance in attendence, (Even met Rock Stonewall that afternoon.) Capped off the evening by searching for a shortcut to another casino and unexpectantly ended up in the Caesars fountain on the other side of some marble wall. That was the only time I was ever asked to leave a casino. The Security Crew claimed I was having too much fun so I was escorted to the street with other fun loving critters. Believe it or not but we hit the next casino on the Strip and somehow won a lot of money pitching quarters into some bandit contraption.

Here's the photo I briefly mentioned above. This one is EAZZZZZZZYYYYYYY

Yes, Don Ross, RIP.

Wow, Stunt...that sounded like lots of fun.

Yeah, I recall Belknap...known for being a diabetic.

Can't recall the certain chainsaw guy you reference.

Met up with Bob and had a few words with him at his recent NY Pro win...contrary to many who post here...he deserved the win in my opinion.

Yeah, wonder if Boots is still alive...it'd seem unlikely.

Did Leonard have a brother who also competed? For some reason, this thought resounds in my mind....

Yep, Doc. Easy one, huh?

Opps, I forgot to mention this to ya, Moose.

The year that Gary lost to Ray - that contest was held at the old Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia.

I had an old truck which we drove down from Huntsville and we were using it to transport the contenders from the hotel (Hyatt?) to the contest venue site about 2 miles away.

On completing what I thought was my last trip, I ran into a worried looking Mike who was standing outside waiting for the arrival of his brother. I told him that I'd go back to the hotel and look for him and I did manage to find him standing on the curb in front of the Hyatt as soon as I drove up. He hopped in  and I asked if he realized that he would be late for the finals briefing. He said, "No because I knew someone would come by and find me. No worries! I let Mike do the worrying for me. I just want to get this over and get that trophy home. Thanks for coming for me."

He was that  confident that day and he did deserve that win.

Those were the good old days.

Yes, Moose, Gary did have a younger bro who looked like he had a lot of potential to do well in bodybuilding, but I don't know how far he took it.

I'm gonna do my best to re-contact some of these old timers soon. I hope that they are all still alive and kicken.

Yeah...that was when that show was run by Doc Neely, of 'Doc's Gym' and posing trunks production.

Dave Rodgers was pretty bug around that time...won the USA in controversial fashion.

I do think he is still there, yes(Doc)?

Yea, Dave Rogers lived in the vicinity of Doc's Gym and Doc helped him out a lot. We arrived at Doc's one evening and were invited to a birthday party in the gym for Dave.

Dave was a great bodybuilder but just not big enough to win an overall title on the West Coast. I never did follow Dave's career so I am not aware of his USA win. Send the details if ya will.

The one impressive individual who I think has been competing the longest has got to be James Hampton. I first met James when he competed in one of the national contests in Las Vegas the year Alan Ichinose won.

And I understand that he's still competing. Good for him! Impressive competitive history. Here's one of the most recent shots I could find of james.

This is a very good thread. Many of the bodybuilders in the pics posted are familiar faces but I am sure many do not know their names or their achievements.Perhaps GETBIG mods should create a special section just for this thread coz it's certainly educational if you're a bodybuilding enthusiast. ;)

Where was the Jr Nats held that year, Bob?

Here's another person you may have competed against at one time or another. (Might have been before your time though.) .

Great guy! He used to encourage me to have a Polish Hot Dog at an old casino in LV called Vegas World because the place was owned and run by Bob Stupak who was also Polish as is the person in the photo.

I did visit the place once or twice and sure enough - Bob Stupak was in the casino serving Polish Hot Dogs from a small cart on the casino floor.

And he took time off to give me an autographed copy of a book he wrote on the casino game of craps.  One of the better reads on that subject.

Photo attached ... Name him (and spell his last name correctly).

Is Haislop still with us?

Here's an old shot ....

Here's an easy one. Every time I hear that Hollywood is about to make a new Superman movie, I email the studios one of these Supe shots to show them what he really is supposed to look like. This one is a good example of what I think.

ANd here are the questions:

Name his alter ego.
Name his ma.
Name his pa.
Name his first girlfriend.
Name his wife.
Name his primary nemisis.
Name who killed him once.
Name his home planet.
Name the green stuff.
Name the first year he appeared in a comic book.
What did that first time cover look like?
What is the value of that comic in great condition worth today?

True or False? Steve Reeves was scheduled to play the role of Superman but the agents got confused and signed George Reeves up instead.
