GOOD GOING, CHEM. Close enuff on Bob's name. Not precise but I don't have enough time to correct it right now.

Is Haislop still with us?

Here's an old shot ....

Name all three.
The year the pic was taken.
The contest.
Steve Reeves, Reg park, don't know the girl..Mr. Universe 1950. My father was there and sat next to Reg Park's dad. My father told me he thought Reg looked more muscular that year than Reeves.

Interesting, Chem! Where was that contest held? I don't know her name either. Could be "Pudgy Stockton" for all I know. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks, Chem.

For a change of pace, here are a few questions for the High Class Gym Rats out there. I have never seen the following equipment in any gym I've been in, but some of you might have. Looks to be on the expensive side of the usual gym gear.

Name the apparatus! What bodypart it works or just plain "what it does". And the manufacturer.

And if you have ever used it and if it works or not.

So here goes ... What Dat?

Here's a complicated piece of expensive looking equipment.

Anyone got one or trained on one or know what it does and how it works?

Who makes it and all that related stuff?

Kind of evident to see what this piece of equipment does, but who manufactures it? This display at the recent Expo in San Diego was one of the most popular equipment lines in the center. I'll include a photo of the entire display in a later posting.

Yea, Dave Rogers lived in the vicinity of Doc's Gym and Doc helped him out a lot. We arrived at Doc's one evening and were invited to a birthday party in the gym for Dave.

Dave was a great bodybuilder but just not big enough to win an overall title on the West Coast. I never did follow Dave's career so I am not aware of his USA win. Send the details if ya will.

The one impressive individual who I think has been competing the longest has got to be James Hampton. I first met James when he competed in one of the national contests in Las Vegas the year Alan Ichinose won.

And I understand that he's still competing. Good for him! Impressive competitive history. Here's one of the most recent shots I could find of james.

hmmm...don't have any otrher info on Dave, stunt, sorry...

Where was the Jr Nats held that year, Bob?

Here's another person you may have competed against at one time or another. (Might have been before your time though.) .

Great guy! He used to encourage me to have a Polish Hot Dog at an old casino in LV called Vegas World because the place was owned and run by Bob Stupak who was also Polish as is the person in the photo.

I did visit the place once or twice and sure enough - Bob Stupak was in the casino serving Polish Hot Dogs from a small cart on the casino floor.

And he took time off to give me an autographed copy of a book he wrote on the casino game of craps.  One of the better reads on that subject.

Photo attached ... Name him (and spell his last name correctly).

yes. I believe BJ won the Junior Mr. America and qwas a top entrant in nationals for some time...very strong...powerlifting background

Here's an easy one. Every time I hear that Hollywood is about to make a new Superman movie, I email the studios one of these Supe shots to show them what he really is supposed to look like. This one is a good example of what I think.

ANd here are the questions:

Name his alter ego.
Name his ma.
Name his pa.
Name his first girlfriend.
Name his wife.
Name his primary nemisis.
Name who killed him once.
Name his home planet.
Name the green stuff.
Name the first year he appeared in a comic book.
What did that first time cover look like?
What is the value of that comic in great condition worth today?

True or False? Steve Reeves was scheduled to play the role of Superman but the agents got confused and signed George Reeves up instead.

well, I never was a DC comics guy...mostly Marvel (I picked up Spider Man #1 at a flea market when I was 14 for twenty five cents!@ :))

Supposedly, vibrates as you stand on it to accentuate mucle recruitment....a study performed at University of Appalachia (I know, its not Yale) has disproven this as well as increased recruitment when using those atocious excercise balls (they found that the balls actually cause you to recruit less fibers)

Moose, It was DOn Howorth who spent some time in jail. I don't recall the exact details but I think he was running some illegal shit for a motorcycle club.

He was a great guy back when I met him in the 60's, so I hope he is doing well today.

He used to show up at the contests in the Embassy Auditorium (downtown L.A.) in a sweater and everyone was amazed by his delts.
Those are the days when Gene Mozee used to MC the shows and roughly 6 - 8 contestants would compete.

I'll see if I can locate some of those old time shots and post them on here.

I do recall a big rivalry at the Cal Contest when John Corvello went up against Bill McArdle. At that time Larry Scott was training Bill, so everyone felt that Bill would win it easily.

It was a tough contest and the judges took an extra long time making their decision, but John won it and Bill took second.

I believe Bill passed away at a young age but the last I heard about John is that he is still working as a Personal Trainer in the L.A. area.

Yeah...sadly, Bill passed in 1995 at 52. Way too young.

Blair was a pioneer in the protein powder world. At least, when it came to taste, his stuff was non-pareil.

Mike Katz told me when he and Corney went to Baghdad for the 72 U, it was so hard to find decent food, that he thanked God he brought Blair protein with him.

The qater, he said, was suspect, not to mention those boiling delicacies called sheeps head in the streets.

Stunt...one for YOU: Do you know Rheo's original name? :)

Shit! I was in Toledo last winter. Is there any worst place than that city in the whole of the USA?

Moose, that vibration machine mentioned and shown above is very similar to the Penny Arcade foot machine we used to use at Playland at the Beach in SF back in the much earlier days. Put a nickle in and let it shake the hell out of your tired feet. When we were kids we used to use it all the time.

I told the guy who was demonstrating this $9,000 vibrator at the Expo that, "If this thing works, I'd have the most muscle-bound feet in existence!"

He insisted that it was capable of doing all sorts of developmental stuff. I merely laughed and said, "OK", but it is my understanding that the MMA guys like it for some unknown reason.

There were at least 4 major companies displaying similar contraptions.

Looks like those old time vitamin salesmen have now graduated into hardward sales.

Moose, I did meet Rheo back around 1963, but I don't know his real name. He or his associates were selling the product in a small shop off to the side of some lake in the middle of the city someplace. I bought it and have to admit that it tasted great. Wasn't it solely an egg product?  I think I paid $12 for the large cannister but don't rely on me for that statement.

Another competitor was selling beef liver protein. Do you recall that one. Tasted terrible.

No, MLO was produced in the Heyward, California area. Owner was MillardWilliamson. A good friend of mine use to shovel it into smaller cans from a 55 gallon drums.

More to follow. Heading off....

Haha...my father told me a story about Toledo...home of the Toledo scale co.

The slogan "Holy Toldeo" comes from the happenstance of an obese person stepping on the scale, noting the immense poundage, and stating.."Holy Toledo!"....don't know how true...dad could have been sassing me.

Mike Katz actually has some left from 30+ years ago...I believe it was egg and some unkowqn constitutes, as well.

Yeah...the beef liver protein powder was horrible....this qas qwhen the tabs were big and we took up to 1200 per day!

Funny, I go to Danville (right near Hayward) in Cali 5 times per year on business.

Yeah...I think the vibratory devices are bunk...but  who am I to mess with the MMA guys!

Betcha Reg would not make you leave backstage if your dad refused to invest with him! :)

Hey I'm from Toledo! But I've lived in Florida since I was 6. My grandfather started the Champion Spark Plug company in Toledo, but I agree for the most part, not the nicest city in the world. Anyhow, so people know what you meant in that quote, I'm re-posting the Arnold story. here it is.....
My father knew Joe Weider from the 1950's and in 1977, at the age of 15 , I saw my first Mr. Olympia and met Arnold, who ran the show for 3 years with Jim Lorimer. Arnold was great and took me backstage where I met all the guys. He did it again in 1978. A few months before the '79 Mr. Olympia, Arnold calls my house and asks to speak to my dad. My father was pretty well known as a big investor in the Finance world and Arnold asked him if he would invest in a documentary film he was making about weight training in prison. My father decided not to invest. Anyhow, I show up at the 79 Olympia with a friend of mine and I go backstage because Arnold always told me to go backstage every year since 1977. So Arnold walks over to me and screams at me, "Get out of here! You're not allowed back here!" I was in shock because he acted like he didn't recognize me, when a few months before he spotted me at World Gym and came up to me and spoke to me for like 20 minutes. So I go Arnold, it's me ..... and he says, "Get the Hell out of here!" I didn't figure it out till later that this was his message to my dad for not investing with him. True story.

Thanks. My dad was a champion golfer in the 40's and 50's and was the first golfer to do heavy weightlifting. In the 40's people thought he was crazy to lift weights and told him he's be too musclebound to swing a club. He ended up being one of the longest hitters of his era.  He did a 315 pound Clean and Jerk, 510 pound deadlift, and 400 pound squat while playing on the golf tour weighing about 175. Can't say I've accomplished as much him and my grandfather. I competed in some bodybuilding shows when I was younger and won some local golf tournaments. I went to film school and have made some films that go into film festivals and I do pretty good trading Currencies and commodities. My dad did instill the importance of discipline in me and I admire people that become champions at anything because I know what it takes to get there.
