Thanks. My dad was a champion golfer in the 40's and 50's and was the first golfer to do heavy weightlifting. In the 40's people thought he was crazy to lift weights and told him he's be too musclebound to swing a club. He ended up being one of the longest hitters of his era.  He did a 315 pound Clean and Jerk, 510 pound deadlift, and 400 pound squat while playing on the golf tour weighing about 175. Can't say I've accomplished as much him and my grandfather. I competed in some bodybuilding shows when I was younger and won some local golf tournaments. I went to film school and have made some films that go into film festivals and I do pretty good trading Currencies and commodities. My dad did instill the importance of discipline in me and I admire people that become champions at anything because I know what it takes to get there.
I thought Gary Player was the first golfer to really incorporate heavy lifting to get in shape, but the years you mention are too early.  ???

Actually, Gary Player is a good friend of my father and credits him as the one who influenced him to start training.

That's a good bench for 14. I had a little bit of publicity at 14 when I went to York, Pennsylvania and stayed with John Grimek for a few days. Back then, my day had me doing lifts like deadlifts, squats, clean and jerk to get stronger for golf. They did a story on me in 1978 in Muscular Development and it's the issue that has Roy Hilligen on the cover. I still have the magazine. It shows me doing a Clean and Jerk with about 170 when I weighing 128 pounds. I'm also in an issue of Muscle Mag International a few years ago. They did a story on my dad and showed a picture of me, taken in 1994 about the time we guest posed together in Florida, Father and son routine. I was about 32 and my dad was 72.

Yeah, he's 85 and still works out. After I saw Pumping Iron, I kind of got out of the weightlifting movements, and focused on bodybuilding. In fact I saw Pumping Iron for the first time when I was at York in 78. Grimek dropped me off at the theater but he wouldn't go in to see the movie. I asked him why he didn't want to see it and he said, "I don't want to watch those Weider boys." Obviously there was some bad blood between Hoffman, him and Joe Weider.

I saw PI around 78, too.

Kudos to your pop.

I am sure Grimek did see it, at least once...maybe alone. There was always a long tradition of bad bogue btw Hoffman, Weider and Lurie camps, as you know

I also stayed at Joe Weider's house a few months later. Saw Betty walking around in a little Nightie and she still had a great body for an older woman. Even at 14, I guess I was into the MILF thing. LOL Anyhow, I'm having lunch with Joe and I tell him how Grimek wouldn't go see Pumping Iron. He couldn't believe it but he never said anything bad about Grimek. However, he really insulted Hoffman. He said, "Bob Hoffman's the biggest hypocrite in the world. He preaches about health when he's drunk half the time. He talks about being virtuous when he used to have hooker's give him blowjobs under the table in restaurants." Now I'm not saying this stuff was true, just quoting Joe.

I have heard a few things about Hoffman such as some of the photographs of him doing a one arm barbell press of over 250 pounds, the weights were fake and made of aluminum. Also heard he didn't lead as healthy a lifestyle as he claimed, but I have never heard about the hooker thing except from Joe. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about John Grimek and I can personally attest to the fact that he was a great guy.

You really know your stuff. Maybe I'm sounding like an old timer but I like the look of a lot of these guys better than some of the pro's today that have the big bellies, synthdol delts and arms. Also most of todays guys pose and stand awkwardly and have no charisma. Of course there are some exceptions, but I think the whole sport has been ruined by the GH, Insulin synthol thing.

Thanks, Chemist.

I may have much bb lore stored in my head, but you have got me by a down-home, Louisiana mile when it comes to experiences.

Yes, I agree with you.

While I harbor deep respect for today's bb's...their hard wqork, resilience, etc., I by far favor the look, attitude, etc of yesterday's bb's.

And you don't sound any older than me....once I heal from surgery, I wqill do my level best to get back in shape and look like a 30 year old :)!

Moose, Chem, any others interested ....... The animosity between the Weiders, Dan Lurie, and the Hoffman camp was thicker than water.

Sorry for this long winded post but it is a valid piece of BB history as I personally recall it ..... I posted something similar to this previously and received a few objections so there are other sides to this story ..... BUT I was there and witnessed it personally and partook in it as was my right to do so.

Here goes ...... This is how I remember it ........

Back around 1976 era (I think Dave Johns won that year) we had a big meeting at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium with about 120 people in attendance each of whom had voting rights due to their official status with the AAU.

That included all the state AAU bodybuilding reps and the likes of the Hoffman contingent, Dan Lurie himself, and Joe and Ben Weider plus the board members who composed the AAU Bodybuilding Committee.

To the best of my knowledge, that meeting was officially called in an effort to establish a bodybuilding organization that would be distinct and separate from the AAU.

If I remember this correctly, there were numerous objections about the availabiilty of travel funds and how they were not available for the AAU bodybuilding athletes because those funds were spent on other athletic endeavors such as travel support for swimmers and olympic lifters.

AND .... it was also evident to most of us that the York Group (Bob Hoffman) was simply using the bodybuilders to support the olympic lifting events. (I personally attended a contest at the Embassy Auditorium in the early 60's at which a national championship bodybuilding contest was held in conjunction with an olympic lifting event; and the bodybuilders did not get  on stage until the lifting was completely over and the awards were made. That was about 2:00 am in the morning. That was the year Jerry Daniels won. A hotly contested decision.)

That event was the first time that I noticed a lot of dissention among the bodybuilders. Just about everyone felt that it was time for a change and the "Bodybuilding Board" picked up the ball and ran with it.

Someone else may be able to name those board members but at present all I can remember was "Jerome Weise". He was the brains behind getting all the legalities and paperwork done when it came time to make some major changes.

I don't know precisely how the Weiders got involved but one of the board members either approached them with a solid plan or they simply invited them to attend an important meeting.

So one Sunday morning of the day following the Mr America contest, we all gathered together at the SMCC for an important meeting. All the "board members", the state reps, many of the athletes, the Weiders, Dan Lurie, and the Hoffman camp ..... Bob Hoffman was't there personally but I kind of recall that he was well represented by Terpak or Grimek and a few others.

I arrived expecting a major battle once I saw who was in attendance, but each group of antagonists were separate from the others and speaking quietly among themselves. The space was set with up an elevated table for the "board members", a speakers podium with microphone, and an amble number of chairs for all in attendance.

I took a seat up front and introduced myself to a guy sitting next to me and he stated that he was one of the first of the Weider employees and knew Ben and Joe better than anyone in the room. And then the meeting started.

I was impressed .... they were following Robert's Rules of Order. This was official function and it was apparent that we were there to get something important accomplished.

At the proper time one of the board members introduced Mr Ben Weider from the floor. He immediately walked up to the podium and ajusted the mic. He was one of a very few in the room dressed in a tie, slacks, and a blue blazer. Very impressive. After a few eloquent words of introduction, he stated that he had an offer to make for all concerned.....

Here is the essence of that offer ........ (as I recall it)

If the present bodybuilding organization were to choose to set up their own governing body, the IFBB would recognize this new governing body as the only amateur governing bodybuilding organization in the United States and its possessions. Furthermore, the IFBB would not promote or sanction any amatuer bodybuilding contest  in the US providing that this new governing body would recognize the IFBB as the world governing body for amatuer and professional contests outside of the US and for professional events within the US. This new organization would have the right to promote amatuer bodybuilding contests in the USA without interference or competition from the IFBB.

Now the room started to heat up. Even the guy next to me started to object. There was a major roar from the Hoffman side of the room and Lurie was on his feet with verbose objections.    .....   to be continued. Back to work....

I read this guy's book when I was still in grammer school. The title has been forgotten but it had the word "Carrot-sticks" in it. If you are interested in the real history of "physical culture" now called "bodybuilding", you might want to check this link out. I think you'll find it interesting unless you object to "too many words". Try to make a guess of his name before hitting the link ....

http://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/ah/1981/1/1981_1_22.shtml

And don't hit the link if you object to a photo with a fig leaf in the appropriate place.

OPPS!! And don't look at the picture below this post. Sorry bout that.

I gotta check back to the picture before I can answer ya, Bix.

In the meantime.......

Some of you may recognize this gentleman. I don't know how he is associated with the world of BB but he was at a BB expo and was the center of attention in some TV show booth, so I joined in and shot his photo.

Good man! He actually thanked me for taking this picture.

You're welcome!

Name him. I sure can't!

PS. He's not blurry. It's the picture.

Bix, I'll be damn surprised if that is a picture of Michalik. It looks more like MM to me when he competed against you-know-who in you-know-where when you-know-when.

I could be wrong though. I find it difficult to ID people without their heads on.

While we're at it, here's another old time BB to ID.

Name him.....
