Name the model for this morphed photo?

Will bodybuilders ever reach this level?

If yes - by when?

No way, Moosejay! I didn't know that about Roy H. Thanks for the update even though it's bad news. Is he back in the SF Bay Area?

Back to bodybuilders in the movies ..... Sextette? Starred Mae West and a group of bodybuilders as shown below..

Brian Abadie   Weight-lifter
Ric Drasin    ...   Weight-lifter
Denny Gable   Shot Putter
Reg Lewis    ...   Athlete
Jim Morris    ...   Weight-lifter
Kal Szkalak    ...   Athlete
Jim Tarleton   Weight-lifter

Name each of the above who have spent time in prison and the reason why. Even Bob won't get this one, methinks.

And which of the above was of importance for designing a famous gym logo. Details.

Yeah, he's 85 and still works out. After I saw Pumping Iron, I kind of got out of the weightlifting movements, and focused on bodybuilding. In fact I saw Pumping Iron for the first time when I was at York in 78. Grimek dropped me off at the theater but he wouldn't go in to see the movie. I asked him why he didn't want to see it and he said, "I don't want to watch those Weider boys." Obviously there was some bad blood between Hoffman, him and Joe Weider.

Chemist:

Glad to hear your father is still training at 85.  I didn't see where you had revealed his name (and yours) anywhere in this thread so I won't either but your father was my inspiration to begin weight training as a skinny kid in the 1960's.

I was an assistant pro golfer at the time and weighed only about 145 pounds at 6'3".  Hoping to gain some weight, I joined a gym called Holiday Spas (whose spokesman at the time was 'Arnold Strong'), but all the older pros ridiculed me and told me golfers should never lift weights.  I found some stories and pictures of your father and was inspired to go ahead and train anyway, though for years I hid my growing muscles under big sweaters.  Turns out, weight training only helped my golf and I have competed in both bodybuilding and golf ever since.

I remember seeing photos of you and your dad in some magazines about 10-12 years ago.  You both looked great!

Thank you. It's really nice to hear that story. Was "Arnold Strong" Schwarzenegger, since that's the name he used in his first movie, "Hercules in New York?" I haven't used my name for now, just kind of like to remain anonymous, the internet being what it is. Feel free to PM me. You've got a great memory to recall that article a while back on us. I'm still training hard but I haven't gone in any shows since about 1995. Just trying currently to hit a new peak in the next 3 months. I try to give myself little goals to motivate me to get in better shape. I put my dad through some pretty hard workouts and he still loves it. Have me or my father ever met you? Do you live in Florida?

Chem, Congrats to you and your dad from me also. I actually have not bought a magazine since the early 80's so I can't figure out who you and your dad are, but I probably know you or know of you both. Once in a while I'll skim through one or more while they are on the news-stand.

I have to say that it's great to talk to some sensible people here who know and understand the sport of bodybuilding and what it takes to get on that stage.

Thanks, guys. And you lady contributors too!

Moose, you are correct on the Gold's Gym answer, but I got no idea of who on that list is a champion bicycler. My best guess would be Tarleton who is one of the guys who served some time in prison. Another hell of a good guy in my estimation who took the wrong turn back then. Anyone know how Jim is doing today?

And as far as "who has passed away", I have no idea but my GUESS would be Brian. Please let me know in your next post.

Regarding fighting with Joe over picture rights ..... I recall Robby's argument over Joe's use of his photo claiming Robby's  body was actually his (or something similar to that). Is that the argument you are referring to?

We visited Joe's office a couple of time and had an enjoyable visit. Even helped him decide on the photo to use on the cover for the next issue. Both my nephews did a few cover shots and were featured in the magazine more than a couple of times.

WEB, Correct on the Atwood cartoon critter. Thanks for participating.

Name the nationally recognized, first female bodybuilder who trained with the pros at Gold's when it was in Santa Monica.... era - 1979.

Chick, if you submit the answer, please use initial of last name only. I know you know this one easily.

Bix, You mean MM's?? If so, .... YEA!

Back before Chick's time, they used to train with kettlebells and wooden pegs that looked identical to bowling alley pins. And they had a mechanical belt in the corner that you could put around your waist that would literally shake the shit out of you. And other places in every major city there was always a vibrating foot machine offering you a seat and a place to insert a nickel to make you tired feet come back to life.

Now some of these contraptions are coming back. Kettlebells were a major attraction at the recent expo in San Diego. And a vibrating machine that you stood on and rattled your bones all the way up to your cavities and beyond. I tried it and all is did to me was make my legs itch like hell for about ten minutes thereafter.

No return of those bowling ball pins though. I guess that will be next year's big attraction.

And possibly the return of bee-pollen and yogurt and vitamin E oil at full strength straight from a dark colored bottle.

Here's the latest version of those kettlebells mentioned above. They sell them to match the color of  your eyeballs. I bought the red pair after a serious night in Las Vegas celebrating one week of no drinking.

Damn...if i knew you were in town....I would have looked you up.

The vibrating thing is called a "Power Plate"

Denny Gable died a few years ago from cardio vascular disease in his home state of Iowa

Kal Szkalak is now a champion bicycle racer...you can google his name and turn up some stuff about his cycling exploits

And Kal did tussle with Weider over his photos

Kal tried to start a bb union...when he did, Arnold and Franco were supposed to back him up...but then did not speak up when they said they would...no big surprise there

Robby has tried to sue over the use of the statue of his torso Weider commissioned...with Joe's head atop it.

Yea, Moose! Once again you are correct. That is Ralph. In the early 60's he had a shaky, old, ramshackeled  gym along the Pacific Coast Highway only steps away from the beach just a bit south of Oceanside, California.

Then he eventually packed it up and moved to Hilo, Hawaii and set up a gym there, competing once in a local NPC/IFBB event.

Then he moved back to the mainland and to the best of my knowledge, he became a Preacher.

This all happened within a period of 40 years or so.

Moose, how old are you to know all this ancient stuff?

Here's a tough question for ya. I ask because I forgot the name of this guy myself. Back around 1962/63 there was an exceptional bodybuilder for that time-period living and training in the San Diego area. Somehow he managed to cut a big slice in his leg while operating a chainsaw but eventually recovered. Do you recall this part of BB history and who he was?

ANother topic -  (See photo below) Here's someone you might have met once or twice back then. I doubt that even Chick would remember him.

I don't know if anyone named Hugo Labra. Sorry if they already did. Hugo was one of the guys that inspired Danny Padilla.
and keep moving!

Dave do you remember the old BB at Ray's gym.  Francis Segura.  I think he was over 70 but looked like he was in his 40's.  He got an article in Life Magazine done on him by the same guy who did the article in Time on me and my show in Florida.

Denny Gable passed away in July of 2000 at the age of 49 from coronary artery disease. He was at one time a training partner of Arnold, was seen in Pumping Iron, and annexed the Mr. Western America title in 1975.
