I don't want them to lower the sanction fee...I want them to lose it all together and start putting on the shows themelves. Every sporting event put's on their own events, NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc.....BB should be no different. IFBB put's on the show, hires a promoter to promote and is in control of their own marketing, etc...

Actually that would be great but won't happen.  The IFBB has no idea how to run a show.  they need the promoters and the sanction fee.  A promoter would love it too since they wouldn't have any money to put out and could collect at least $10,000 to promote the show.  But the IFBB would never want that responsibility.  The IFBB has it perfect the way it is.  The find suckers promoters to pay for everything to put on the show AND they pay the IFBB a ton of money to put on a show promoting the IFBB.  NO WAY will the IFBB change that deal.

Agreed, but professional promoters would have problems getting bums on seats due to so many bullshit results of late. It's been said time and time again for years, BUT Bodybuilding really does need a shake up. It needs to be run by people who love the sport NOT greedy business men. It's just become a freak show with no personalities in, coz they all get banned for speaking their mind.... Look at the supposed No 1 in the world, a puppet who can't even get his basics (tan and diet) right !!!!!!

Dude, Vyotech isnt doing that bad. As a distributor, we have moved more Vyotech products in the first 3 months of this year than in the last 6 months of last year. Not bad at all.  Do I need to send you some Goat Whey, Absolution or Viraloid. Might calm you down a little. Remember, Goat Whey doesnt make you fart...

Pro shows cost quite a number to have. Sanction fees, prize money, officials, hotel rooms, insurance, staging, lighting, promotion and much more. You need sponsors, a good fan base around the area, and so on.  The promoters have promoted NPC shows for a long time in that area, but the cost of the IFBB show probably was too much in terms of how many tickets were sold.

Ron, can u send me some goat whey :)

how to get more fans into the seats:   have bigger names in the contest

how to have bigger names in the contest:   only give the overall winner a bid to the Olympia.  require everyone to requalify every year.

how to get more fans into the seats: MAKE IT ENTERTAINING instead of cutting off the only somewhat entertainer (Kai Greene) when he hits the time limit.
How to have bigger names: $$, benefits, and so forth

there.s tons of stuff these guys did wrong, for one thing no advertising in the area it is put on with a lame amateur show in a venue not condusive to bbing. competetion. you put on a show in a 4000 seat arena and 200  people show{generous estimate}. it's pretty lame. no one had a good view of the show because this is venue is set up for concerts, i'm sure no one was going to rush the stage sure maybe one or two flamers.as far as the entrants themselves there was 40k in prize money first got 20k down to 5th 1k, the 12 or so other guys ended up with nothing for their efforts. go on these guys website they've been on the computer for 5 or more years yet they are still under constuction,by the way there a supplement co. topphysique.com.

how to get more fans in the seats;  have Arnold be the emcee at every show.  Have him sign an autograph and take a picture with every person who buys a seat.  Do a commercial with Arnold promoting the show and that he will be there.  I promise you the seats will be filled.

Politically, Arnold can't do that.  He can barely bring himself to appear at his namesake show.

Ron - are you saying the putting on pro shows is not worthwhile?

Pro shows can be very worthwhile, but they need to be promoted correctly, with sponsors, expo, etc.  Smaller shows have a harder time, because of a myriad of reasons. But a good lineup does help.  The big shows, Ironman, Arnold, Olympia, New York Pro have the base to do that with a lot of fans around them. The smaller shows have a smaller fan base to get.

Promoting NPC shows is easy because every competitor brings 5-20 friends, family, or gymrats to the show. The problem with promoting a smaller Pro show is that with the exception of the big names, competitors are unlikely to draw any fans at all.

NPC shows require a lot of hard work too. Promoting, getting competitors and more. But yes, they tend to bring more family and friends. Many people at these shows are there to see the hard work, dedication and inspiration someone brings.

The entertainment factor is the question between the bodybuilding purists vs the ones that want more entertainment in the show. I say have both.  Prejudging is serious, the finals should be entertaining.

Eliminate prejudging.  It has no value.

Might as well have a pre-event social gathering and judge how each competitor works the room.

why did the promoters of the Keystone not promote their own show?
Hell, if you want to attract an audience you need to market your product....didnt they even think of this?  ???

all the pro bodybuilding promoters seem to concentrate on advertising nationally in the bodybuilding mags.   they think people are going to fly in from across the US to see a second or third tier show.  but the demographics of who buys the mags and who can afford a weekend get-away don't correlate well.  then the promoters spend little on local advertising, or they advertise in the wrong places.

back in Feb I saw a few ads for the LA Fitness Expo, but in none of the ads was it apparent that  a pro bodybuilding show was part of it.  But it was clear that there were going to be MMA demos.

I still think the most cost effective advertising for a bodybuilding show is to stand in front of the serious gyms handing out 4x5 cards.

Sounds silly, but I really think having more bikini type competitions to go along with the show will help out.  Usually a guy will be into bodybuilding and want to go to a show but how does he convince his buddies who don't work out to go see men in thongs?  You will always have your gay fan base but seriously there usually not enough gay people in a concetrated area to make a contest worthwhile.  Only way to increase attendance is to increase the hetero audience and the female audience.  Guess what happens when you tell your girl you are going to a bodybuilding show but they also have a bikini contest?  No way she lets you go alone, so she brings her friends, and they "pretend" to be attracted to the bodybuilders.

Win win situation.
