ECA... for its actual purpose?
« on: April 13, 2008, 03:41:16 PM »
As you may know from my getbig whining, I suffer from sinus congestion now that I live in pollen country.  I'm thinking about using ECA, well, the Bronkaid (expectorant/bronchodilator) for its intended purpose, to:

For the temporary relief of shortness of breath, tightness in chest, wheezing and cough associated with bronchial asthma. Helps loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to rid the bronchial passageways of bothersome mucus and drain bronchial tubes...

So can I just use it forever?  I take 50 mg caff in the AM, and 50 mg in the afternoon (no soda or coffee though).  Will it be like being on ECA forever, and make me all scrawny?  Should I reduce the Bronkaid dosage to see just how little I can get by on, to cure sinuses?  Any longterm worries?  Thanks!

If anything, an object like that would make my breathing worse, BSB.

I got freaked out from 2 doses a day of ECA, got me ticker checked out, I was fine.

What I'd do here is a much smaller dose... instead of 200 mg caffeine, only 50.  And maybe split up the Broknaid/ephedrine to the smallest piece I could get by on.

The pro ECA guys on here always mention the story of some woman who was on it for 50 years at 100mg/day. Not sure if that is an urban legend.

...why the caffeine? You're not trying to lose weight, just open your noseways.

the same reason most americans take it... to wake up in the AM :)

I used to be on 400 to 600 mg per day.  Got it down to 1/4 a yellow in the AM, and 1/4 a yellow in the PM.

thanks.  I've tried claritin, sudafed, zyrtec, and a few others.  All helped a little bit, but none was as great as the Bronkaid.

So you just used it in spring/summer?  How long at a time?  what kinda dose?

standard ECA 25mg/200mg caf/81mg aspirin...2 weeks on 2 weeks off.

upon waking and then around 7pm.  For the 7pm dose I play it by ear, sometimes I skip it.

perhaps it is purely mental, but I find that vasopro works better *shrugs*

Try Sinus Buster, or a similar capsaicin based product if you're worried about the side effects of eca.  I have cronic sinus problems.  Heard about this stuff on Stern, and gave it a try.  Burns for a bit, but works wonders for me.  Not sure about effects of long term use as I only recently started using it.

drop the caffiene

 eat some more healthy fats

This one? 150mg/day for 30 years for asthma. Increasing to a gram a day wasn't a good idea  :D

    [Ephedrine psychosis]
    [Article in Hebrew]

Shufman NE, Witztum E, Vass A.

Jerusalem Institute for Treatment of Substance Abuse.

Ephedrine has both alpha- and beta-adrenergic activity, and both direct and indirect effects on receptors. Its stimulatory effects on the central nervous system are more prolonged, though less potent, than those of adrenalin. It raises blood pressure both by increasing cardiac output and inducing peripheral vasoconstriction. It is still commonly used as a bronchodilator. However, since prolonged use leads to decreased effectiveness, patients tend to increase the dose themselves. The clinical picture of ephedrine psychosis resembles that induced by amphetamines: primarily a paranoid psychosis with delusions of persecution and auditory and visual hallucinations in a setting of unclouded consciousness. We present a 57-year-old woman who had been taking a usual dose of ephedrine for bronchial asthma (50 mg 3 times a day) for more than 30 years. When her husband died she developed depression, for which she tried to use ephedrine as an antidepressive, increasing the dose to 500 to 1000 mg a day over the course of half a year. She developed paranoid psychosis with delusions of persecution and auditory hallucinations, despite a clear sensorium. Recovery was rapid after ephedrine was gradually reduced to 200 mg a day and a small dose (200 mg) of the neuroleptic thioridazine was added.

it's your lucky day, i have the same problem as you, congestion, my eyes cry, oh man its just the worst! BUT i found a great med 2 years ago and i swear you will just have to take it for a week or so, and forget about congestion for the rest of the year.
Its called neoclaritine, dont hate yet, just buy it, its pretty cheap and tell me how do you feel after 1 week.

Sucks when your third putt goes leaves you longer from the hole.

Did you end up four putting?

I had insomnia so the doc prescribed the Golf Channel.

I'm taking 1/3 a bronkaid in the AM, and 1/3 a bronkaid at night.

I'm also taking 40 mg caffeine at those times - which is equal to a can of soda or 1/3 cup of coffee - very minimal but prevents the headache from my body being used to it.

This is my 3rd day, and after battling chest congestion for months, it's completely gone.  Bronkaid rules.  No ECA jitters, probably not taking enough (and no aspirin of course).

Ephedrine is really not that strong of a stimulant. It's when you take it with caffeine that it hits you hard. You can give a lot of people ephedrine and they wouldn't know they took it - unless they had a lot of caffeine with it.
