Hams trained separate or with quads?
« on: April 21, 2008, 11:04:02 AM »
I am trying to get my hams up  and they have never been all that great . I also need more quad sweep overall but calfs are fine.
Better to go separate quad and ham workouts?

either that or put them first in your leg routine before quads

I split my leg workouts into two days last off-season to grow my legs and it worked really well.

First day was focused on quads and glutes, with squats, leg press, leg extensions, etc.

Second day was focused on hams, with lunges, SLDLs, GHRs, and seated and lying hammy curls.

quads by themselves and hams with back, 4 sets of lying leg curls, 4 sets of db stiff legs.

LOL thanks.  Squatting, lunging, and deadlifting (and GHRs) all hit the glutes plenty, so you don't really need any more glute-specific exercises.  Sometimes I would throw in a few butt blaster sets, but not really a need to.

rip was born with an ass to die for.

Weights did not have so much to do with it so don't try this at home.

It seems the common wisdom for results is separate days
I am opting for quads alone with calfs and hams with bi's on another day.
split will be as follows:
day 1, quads , calfs
day 2 back , rear delts, traps, abs
day 3 hams , biceps forarms, calfs
day 4 chest, Fr-side delts , tris, abs.

Thanks any other tips welcome.
I can't do stiff leg deads due a back injury and arthritis in low back, I do hyperextensions instead.

try the stiff legs with dumbbells Howie, you won't believe the burn, pump and soreness and NEXT TO ZERO stress on the low back, either hold the bells in front or on your sides, awesome movement and you'll get some added forearm size from holding some heavy db's for the duration of the set.

One thing that i have done from time to time if  i can't get into the gym 5 days a week is alternate between ham and quads in the same workout. For example, I would do sets of squats then sets of lying leg curls, then leg presses followed by seated leg curls, hack squats and SLDL and ending with lunges.

I used to do hamstrings with quads but now I've split them up and train my whole body over five days.

Quads are now done on their own (with a bit of ab work thrown in for good measure) and hamstrings are trained with calves a few days later (again, with abs). It's working well so far and is allowing me to hit my legs harder and heavier with more energy to spare.

I am pretty old at 49, the back issue is from an old injury of the low back/sacrum area.

Squad, The actual motion of stiff legged deads of any kind seem to throw my back out while hyper extensions do NOT....go figure.
I have gotten decent results working both quads and hams on the same day if I do hams in the morning and quads in the early eve.

you don't really need stiffs anyway, just do lying legs curls and either seated leg curls or standing one leg curls if your gym has those machines.
