OK, I will take the fact that some of you are not the smartest in math. But in many contests you have at least 7-9 judges, which score the athletes. The average 5 make up the score. And they rate the competitors from 1-15. Anyone left, gets a 16. The more competitors there are, the better chance of someone placing 16, 17th, 18, etc.
That is because of the point system. For instance, if one competitor gets a 1-2-2-1-2-1-2-1-2, from nine judge, you take off the top and bottom two, which leaves you with 2-2-2-1-1 = 8
If judges vary, you can have more than 15 placings, etc.
Now, for other shows that have more than x amount of competitors, only the top 15 get to go on to the finals. That happens in a few shows around the year.
