I guess the biggest Q is... why did so many people build a second home when the demand just wasn't there?

So many people put their savings into 1-2 homes they weren't going to live in, only re-sell for a profit or rent out.

If there is enough places for 310 million people to live (and very minimal population growth), why would people believe that there would be demand for all these homes?

Or why are so many people building custom homes right now, when you can buy twice the house if you buy a preexisting one? I am not saying there are tons of new houses being built, but I scratch my head when I see them, too many steals to find out there with foreclosures and people wanting out etc., just makes no sense to pay top dollar to build.
