Shitloads of natural gas?  My gas bill is increasing 20% starting 07/01/08.  The price of natural gas is directly affected by the price of crude oil.
Food costs are going up because of fatties, rising production costs, transportation costs, and the great ethanol/corn idea that farmers are cashing in on now.
Using electricity as an oil alternative will only increase the demand/price of electricity itself, another cost.
The world is truly fucked.

Did you read my post?  The supply of electricity is limitless.  Coal could last centuries, and nuclear could last practically forever.

If self-responsibility is up to a society that consists of over 50% fat people, the healthy people will always be paying extra costs because of their lifestyle choices.  A surplus can only be created if the demand is reduced.  Do you honestly think that these people are willing to stop driving and start walking, let alone join a gym and watch their diets?

Self-responsibility can still save the day.

Get rid of SUV's, Starbuck's Lattes, every possible type of BS I-Phone, and many other forms of sloth, and you'd see surplusses in many of the areas you mentioned as weaknesses.

What you suggest is like trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon, and is not the answer.  People will not sacrifice anyway.  But the good news is if we act quickly enough, they won't have to... start building more nuclear plants, start developing hydrogen infrastructure, and get the fuel-cell vehicles on the assembly lines and everything will be fine.

Or if supply is increased.  You're forgetting half the equation.

Yes...but you know we have not had a new refinery built here since 1971...dems refuse to drill in Gulf of Mexico, or Alaska for that matter.....

I'm all in favor of getting rid of fatties...  their lack of willpower sickens me!  >:(    But our energy issues need to be solved anyway, and transitioning off of oil is the only way to do that.  As an added bonus, doing this will wipe out 1/3 of our trade deficit (no more imported oil) and get us out of the middle east for good.

If everyone who had to got closer to ideal bodyfat/wt...we'd eradicate most of the federal healthcare deficit!

Bbers consume far more food than is required.

They are contributing to a global food shortage.

However, we don't care much.

nevermind the fact that cattle flatulence is a greater contributor then the difference of a few gallons of gasoline to global warming

True.  What I'm talking about is the long-term solution...  where we need to go to solve this once and for all, but the logistics will take decades.  In the short term, we should be sinking wells in ANWR, offsore on the coasts, and anywhere else oil can be had domestically, as well as increasing refining capacity.  We should also be pressing the automakers to put out plug-in hybrids: cars with electric primary drives that also have gasoline or diesel engines to keep the batteries charged on trips longer than what the batteries will allow.  The technology exists today, and this could drastically reduce our usage while waiting for the hydrogen infrastructure to be laid down.

They can still buy food from us, but they'll have to spend less on those fancy tall buildings in Dubai, return some of the accumulated wealth they've gotten from us over the decades, and put some of their people to work in factories sending us some of the cheap schlock we buy from China now.

Indeed.

Imagine the morass they will truly be in if and when , in the next 20-30 years, we no longer need their oil.

Just because we won't be buying their oil doesn't mean no one will.  The scenario will probably go more like this:  we send them food, they send the Chinese oil, and the Chinese send us more cheap shit.

I don't know anyones age here, nor do I care.  Just to give you an idea from my point of view.  I can remember being in school say ages 7-13 and having one or two "fat kids" in my class.  Just imagine now, over half of those classes are filled with "fat kids".  It kind of puts things in perspective as to how bad things are, doesn't it?

Very, very true.

We'd always have one fat kid...by the end of the year, he'd be skinny.

Now, statistics say that if you are fat as a child, its much less likely that he/she will ever 'grow out of it'

Imagine the health problems those kids will have when they hit their teen's/early 20's and the impact it will have on the health care systems?

Bruff...I had a 15 year old patient who weighed 505 pounds.

Depressed...all kinds of horrible problems.

He'd be taken into my clinic by his 'grandmama...'

Well, I wanted to speak to his mother...he needed serious intervention...the likes of which I could not provide.

So she gave me his mama's work number.

I called her and implored that her kid needed help.

But she was too busy "working her job at Toys-R-Us".

So I called DCF on her, and she was relinquished of her custody of him.

Dirtbag of a mother.

Diabetes and related issues will be the real cost here.  If fat people end up dying of heart attacks at 55 instead of staying thin and getting cancer or Alzheimer's at 70, it would actually end up saving us money.

I don't know which country you live in; but, here the health care is "free".  When I started responding to this thread it made me think of the health issues that are caused by somebody overweight.  If you want to live a shitty lifestyle then so be it; but, don't expect me to pay for it.

There's no such thing as a free lunch.  You pay for it in the form of taxes, we pay for it in the form of insurance premiums.

Yeah...these foreigners never cease to make me laugh with all of this "Free" shit they boast about.

Crappy, low quality, "Lucky if you awaken from anesthesia" health "care";

Taxed at up to 70% in some countries

And they take three hour lunches.

Real productivity, we are talking here.
