Drag curls
« on: May 22, 2008, 06:21:12 PM »
I was watching battle for olympia and they showed david henry doing drag curls with a easy curl bar.. I gave them a shot in the gym today gave me a pretty nice pump... Anyone have any good results with them????

Classic Gironda Exercise.  My favorite way to perform these is either with the straight bar or with the low cable pulley.  Really pumps the biceps.

Its like a reverse grip barbell curl, though you keep your elbows right back, rather than pinned to your side. When you curl up, keep it in contact with your torso, so it seems like you are dragging it up, hence the name. Really hits the brachialis. You won't need much weight.
No doubt about it...

he does them absolutely horribly wrong.. I'm pretty sure if u keep that up you can injure your bicep tendon. He's doing a semi upright row, when it is really supposed to be a CURLING movement.

Basically you CURL the bar up along the body in a straight line; this requires that your elbows move back, but NOT up. If your elbows/shoulders are moving up then you are doing the exercise WRONG.

A Drag curl done right is 10 times harder than a regular curl, and a very efective movement for the biceps.

ps- the top portion of the exercise is very important, as this portion allows for PEAK CONTRACTION, i.e. it is the hardest portion of the exercise and this is what the exercise was modified to allow for. So pay close attention to the top portion and do it right.

Does it matter if it's underhand or overhand grip for these? Obviously overhand is going to hit more of the forearm which I'm not really concerned with when I'm working my biceps.

answered your own question, done it both ways myself and liked it as well. but ofcourse i was using it to hit my upepr forearms and brachialis.

Yes on all counts. Great burn when done correctly, literally dragging it up the front of the bod..

WOW!!! Just tried them today and I'm hooked...My biceps literally felt as if they were going to bust at the contraction..I actually had to be careful when I squeezed at that point! I used a 30lb EZ bar and did 3 x 10...I def. recommend

MAAAAaaaa has "ta ta" copyrighted. use it if you want, but you'll owe him royalties. deal.  >:(

drag curls are pretty good. normally a curl has a sticking point where the forearm is parallel to the floor. drag curls make the whole move a sticking point.
