Have I worked this out properly...
« on: May 25, 2008, 01:52:22 PM »
A while ago I was reading about gaining/losing weight and I read that you should ideally be putting on about 2 pounds per week, without steroids. Same with diets and losing weight etc.

So with that in mind, I worked out, I weigh only 149 pounds now (at the very beginning of starting weights!) and I have seen guys who are 6' 2" and 220 pounds - they are huge guys, I am about 5" 11' so, to play it safe I set a target of 220 pounds.

I want to go from 150 pounds to 220 pounds. All this is theoretical OK, I know a 5" 11' guy would look probably too big if he were 220 pounds...

So then I want to gain 70 pounds. All this weight has to be muscle!

Heres the question - if its possible to put on 2 pounds a week, it would only take 35 weeks to go from 150 pounds to 220 pounds and yet... thats impossible!

How long, without steroids, does it take someone to go from 150 pounds to 220 pounds?

Or 150 pounds to 180 pounds? If I was 180 pounds I would be like Brad Pitt... if I were 220 pounds I would be like Ron Coleman... I wanna just get bigger really like everyone here.

Thing is - 2 pounds a week x 35 weeks = 70 pounds... what am I missing?

So even if I said 52 weeks, this time next year I could be 220 pounds? Hahaha! Imagine it!

Whats the normal amount to put on in one year? If you eat properly, sleep properly and do a decent range of exercises? Not 2 pounds a week surely, thats over 100 pounds a year = no way.

Going from 150-220 is going to take years.  Sure at first you might be able to put on 2 pounds of muscle in a week, but this will quickly slow down.  At a certain point the gains will slow down, and even stop.  At this point you need to start playing around with training and diet.  Eating and training properly will not be the issue, but you will have to eat and train OUTSTANDINGLY to make gains once you've been training for a while.

One more thing to remember is that most likely you will not be putting on LEAN muscle.  Unless you are genetically gifted and have a super diet, you will gain fat while gaining weight.  As a matter of fact many people think the only way to put on muscle is to put on fat at the same time.

Not to put you off in any way, but it will take a lot of hard hard work and dedication to get to a lean 220 pounds.

Good luck
It hasn't helped...

Yes, it's possible to gain 2 pounds a week.... but the thing to bear in mind is that is based on a good growth regime. Then after say 8 weeks of that growth cycle, you would then look to maintain as much as possible the gains you have made. You simply can't keep growing all the time, the body will adapt and plateau.

As a natural your game plan should always be: 2 steps forward, one step back. Simply explained, when you are training at your hardest and eating accordingly you gain 2 steps forward. Once you come off that training regime you will not be able to sustain all of the gains you have made, but you will still look to hold onto a good portion, hence 1 step back.

Hope that made sense.

Yes, its a flight of fantasy to suggest "150 to 220 pounds in 52 weeks" but thats well below the 2 pounds a week thing everyone says.

In the beginning... I like that because after 1 month, a skinny guy (150LB) can look at least not so skinny, I only did about 10 workouts last time round and it shows... I am on the unflavoured whey protein - and lots of it! Think I had about 60 grams in the last 2.5 hours, yummy!

You are unlikely to add 70 lbs of muscle if you train for the rest of your life and remain natural.Don't worry too much about setting weight targets-it's how you look not what the scales say that is important.

I weigh 10 st 7 lbs (147 lbs) at the moment so I worked out a set of
figures ranging from 0.1 lb a week to 2.0 lb a week in gains over a 52
week period.

This covers all bases. If I am a freak I would only put on 0.1 lb a week.

Likewise putting on 2 lbs a week again is freaky (too much for 52 weeks,
see the figures)

So maybe around 0.5 lbs a week is what I should aim for? That would be
10 st 7 lbs to 12 st 4 lbs in 12 months. This doesn't seem unreasonable
to me.

 0.1 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 5.20 LBS = 0.37 ST = Weight @ 10.87 ST
 0.2 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 10.4 LBS = 0.74 ST = Weight @ 11.24 ST
 0.3 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 15.6 LBS = 1.11 ST = Weight @ 11.61 ST
 0.4 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 20.8 LBS = 1.49 ST = Weight @ 12.00 ST
 0.5 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 26.0 LBS = 1.86 ST = Weight @ 12.36 ST
 0.6 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 31.2 LBS = 2.23 ST = Weight @ 12.73 ST
 0.7 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 36.4 LBS = 2.60 ST = Weight @ 13.10 ST
 0.8 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 41.6 LBS = 2.97 ST = Weight @ 13.47 ST
 0.9 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 46.8 LBS = 3.34 ST = Weight @ 13.84 ST
 1.0 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 52.0 LBS = 3.71 ST = Weight @ 14.20 ST
 1.1 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 57.2 LBS = 4.09 ST = Weight @ 14.59 ST
 1.2 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 62.4 LBS = 4.46 ST = Weight @ 14.96 ST
 1.3 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 67.6 LBS = 4.83 ST = Weight @ 15.33 ST
 1.4 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 72.8 LBS = 5.20 ST = Weight @ 15.70 ST
 1.5 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 78.0 LBS = 5.57 ST = Weight @ 16.07 ST
 1.6 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 83.2 LBS = 5.94 ST = Weight @ 16.44 ST
 1.7 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 88.4 LBS = 6.31 ST = Weight @ 16.81 ST
 1.8 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 93.6 LBS = 6.69 ST = Weight @ 17.19 ST
 1.9 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 98.8 LBS = 7.06 ST = Weight @ 17.56 ST
 2.0 LBS a week x 52 weeks = 104  LBS = 7.43 ST = Weight @ 17.93 ST

These charts work the same for anyone...

 0.1 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +5.20 LBS (+0.37 ST)
 0.2 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +10.4 LBS (+0.74 ST)
 0.3 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +15.6 LBS (+1.11 ST)
 0.4 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +20.8 LBS (+1.49 ST)
 0.5 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +26.0 LBS (+1.86 ST)
 0.6 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +31.2 LBS (+2.23 ST)
 0.7 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +36.4 LBS (+2.60 ST)
 0.8 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +41.6 LBS (+2.97 ST)
 0.9 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +46.8 LBS (+3.34 ST)
 1.0 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +52.0 LBS (+3.71 ST)

 1.1 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +57.2 LBS (+4.09 ST)
 1.2 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +62.4 LBS (+4.46 ST)

 1.4 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +72.8 LBS (+5.20 ST)
 1.5 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +78.0 LBS (+5.57 ST)
 1.6 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +83.2 LBS (+5.94 ST)
 1.7 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +88.4 LBS (+6.31 ST)
 1.8 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +93.6 LBS (+6.69 ST)
 1.9 LBS a week x 52 weeks = +98.8 LBS (+7.06 ST)

BodyBuilding is not mathematics I know but those charts are just to see, if you put on X amount on average then you can easily see what one year of training will give you - doesn't matter about what the training even is, in fact the charts do not even need to apply to bodybuilding, they apply if you just want to put on fat but - who in their right mind would do that, lol. Me a few years back when I was 9 St 7 Lbs but not now. I have a little bit of flab round my belly and I am only 10St 12Lbs now but... I sure don't need any more fat! Can always be run off with 4 weeks of cardio, although its damn efficient fat (hard to get rid of which is actually a good thing body-wise, assuming you are not too fat to start with)

OK enough of the bullshit...

I am well on target, heres the full story...

April/May/June 2006 I weighed 133 Pounds! (9 St 7 Lbs). This is the very first time I so much as touched a bar or bell. This is the first time i did a sit up and guess what - I could not even sit up once, now I am no doctor but that is f**king atrocious, just extremely unhealthy... but I kept at it and saw my muscles appearing by the week...  I only did 3 months or whatever, maybe less, then I had my appendix out and just never took up the weights again, until now...

August 2006 I had my appendix out and stopped doing weights. I had gone from 133 pounds to 147 pounds in 3 months. IMO if you can go from being a skinny beggar (133 pounds) to 147 pounds in 3 months and see your muscles, feel the strength, need another 5-10-15-20 Kg on the bar etc... you have no worries, all these skinny people - have they ever TRIED to do weights ever in their entire lifetime? I never did! I thought big guys were big because they spent 8 hours a day in the gym... oh what?! My workouts of 6 reps x 3 sets don't even add up to 8 minutes a week nevermind 8 hours a day... it shows how mis-educated I was. I had no clue why or how muscly people got that way! Then you find Whey Protein and it all comes together - EAT LOADS OF WHEY PROTEIN!

So I gained 14 pounds in 3 months, about. I dunno how long I was doing weights for... can't be more than 3 months... this is about 4.5 pounds a month gained - which is not good enough, the "benchmark" so to speak, what I aim for, is 2 lbs a week.

I always considered myself to be a struggler when it comes to gaining weight until I realized I never excersized, or ate enough.

Fast forward to now (June 2008), about 10 days ago I started doing weights again. I could do 2 or 3 reps with the weight I used to do 6 reps with, but didn't take any weight off and overdid it a bit. My arms ached for 4 days - I felt like shit and got a little worried, had a migraine at one point too, I intended to overdo it yeah but only to rip my muscles, not to half nuke them!!

Now, they eventually healed and you know what - even after one workout, I feel stronger.

Now I weigh 10 St 12 Lbs and have put on 2 pounds in the last 7 days, with all things being equal (weighed myself at the same time of day each time)

Every pound counts when you're as thin as me. Currently 5' 10" and 152 lbs.

Lets see where I am in 6 months - without steroids (I don't want a fat neck, or anger!)

If I aim for 152 to 192 lbs in 6 months, thats +40 pounds which is roughly 1.5 pounds a week.

If you read this whole post and want 15 minutes of your life back, tough shit m8. :P

You think too much and you write too much. You could have already added 2 pounds if you stopped posting here.

Maybe you're over-complicating things when all the chart shows is what you'll gain if you gain "X" amount per week on average. Don't tell me you never weigh yourself? If you do then you do know what you're gaining per week on average - you know because you weigh yourself - therefore you can refer to that chart to see where you'll be IF you carry on gaining at the rate you have for say, the last 4 weeks.

It wasn't me "claiming to gain 2 lbs from some mathmatical formula" really.

I gained 2 lbs without that formula dude!

I never weigh myself.

It absolutely interesting how much i weigh. i lift, have fun, have a good diet and build up muscle going along.

You're only gonna end up in frustration if you are weighing yourself three times a day and end up not gaining 70 pounds of muscle in less than one year.
It's impossible, even on steroids, hgh, insulin and whatever.

You will either turn out superfat or nothing. If you gain 20 pounds of lean muscle mass in one year, you are a very  lucky guy.

What is your age roundabout?
Trying to see how you can pull of
70 pounds.
For example
In 8th grade I was around 140
In my 30's I'm 230
It took ALOT but I gained 60 pounds in a year and a half
but I was in a bad accident and was down from 210 and went to 170
and could not walk.
I'm now at 230 but prob at 15 percent body fat

What donkey said... naturally?

I only aim for gaining 70 lbs because why aim for any less?

I won't be disappointed if I only gain a bit.

Its right what donkey said though about even weighing yourself... I am only about 11st now but I look in the mirror and can see, like if I cross my arms, I have got bigger theres no doubt about that.

Its also true when you're a skinny bastard like me @ what... 155 lbs, when you gain 5 lbs you REALLY notice it because you added a considerable percentage of your own bodyweight there - 14lbs added to 155lbs man means a skinny wretch turns into a kinda well-defined person! Still a skinny mofo yeah but he is catching up!

Weighing yourself can be inaccurate if say, you'r losing fat as well as gaining muscle - you're then gaining more than you think, which is of course the best scenario, hehe.

So you reckon stop bothering about weight... do some killer workouts for the next 6 months and see what I weigh in 6 months... thats actually a cracking idea... I have always got my mirror! Its not vanity though its only to keep myself in check, thats my defence anyway.

Set up some small range achievable goals, and keep the 70 pounds as your long range goal.

No natural or even a guy using gear is gonna` add 70 pounds of muscle in 35 weeks.

In the beginning, gains come fast then you plateau and they level off and it`s a battle at times to gain an ounce of muscle.

Be patient and read all you can about bodybuilding for beginners.

Good luck.

The plateau thing though - what if you have a long rest like 1 month, then take up weights again? Isn't the sole cause of a "plateau" the fact that your muscles become "too" accustomed to the stress? Its naturally what muscles will do, but the point is always to add weight? I don't think its just a case of adding weight and you need a long rest, even... oh god... shrink a little... but then 1 month later do a killer workout, aching muscles for 1 week = HUGE gains.

Its only a theory, unless what I am talking about is well known to stop the plateau?

I gained 4 lbs in 2 weeks first 2 weeks then gained really nothing the next week, my muscles seemed to adapt so fast, but they became a lot stronger and a lot bigger in comparison with their own size, on that first workout - my muscles ached for 1 week!

Surely thats the key - aching muscles... no pain no gain and all that... how to avoid the plateau though, I say QUIT workin out so freaking much! Then boom, shock yourself once more and take it to the next level.

You are clueless.

Thanks, that really helps.

I guess its always easier to just quickly insult someone, rather than actually help.

Not too sure how me being clueless fits in when I am only saying whats happened for me personally re: the plateau.

OK so my theory is, you can gain more muscle mass by resting 1 month as opposed to doing the same muscle every 48 hours, so the 1 month rest wipes out the plateau completely, tell me why thats wrong?

I can't be wrong though dude if I am talking from personal experience, its like you telling me I didn't go shopping yesterday when I did.

Maybe this forum just ain't here to be a resource.

There is plenty of info here:
