Gayer than having a cat wake me every night at around 4 am just to get attention from me examples cuddles, petting and then laying on my chest as I try to get back to sleep. When I roll over onto my side she gets up on my hip and curls up and goes to sleep.

Call me harsh, I require my puppies to adhere to my schedule. They wake up when I wake up in the morning. If they try to coerce me into getting up earlier, I ignore them. I am the Alpha dog in this pack. They can like it or find a different pack....not that I would let them. The fact is, they can go potty whenever they wish as long as they go out the series of dog doors I've provided them with no assist from me. Since they cannot open a can of their food or get their dishes out of the dishwasher to fix their breakfast, they are dependent on me. They eat when I am ready to feed them. I suspect they have bitterly complained to the ASPCA via emails and bark codes. However, their complaints have been met with scorn, since I love them and would do nothing to harm them.
Just so you know, dogs (and I don't know about their feline friends) have the intellect of a two year old. Like most two year olds, they can be very demanding and annoying, but it is up to us adults to set the boundaries for them. In the end, they will appreciate you doing this and so will you.
